The Legal, Risk, and Compliance (LRC) department at Valon is responsible for interpreting and advising our company on the various legal, regulatory, and contractual provisions that impact the business. Given how heavily regulated the mortgage industry is, compliance and risk management sit at the very core of our business. The team partners closely with our operations, finance, and technology teams to provide the applicable legal and compliance expertise and frameworks that help inform the decisions that the business makes. As a member of the LRC team, you will work closely with internal clients across the company to ensure that Valon's interests are protected. We are looking to add a Counsel to our Legal, Risk, and Compliance team. In this role, you will support legal and compliance functions across Valon's growing mortgage lending and servicing businesses. You will work closely with more senior attorneys and business stakeholders to help navigate the legal and regulatory landscape as we continue to scale our loan portfolio and develop our technology platform. You'll have exposure to a wide range of mortgage-related legal issues, from supporting new product features and operational initiatives to assisting with loan-level escalations and regulatory matters. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with legal and regulatory issues in mortgage lending and servicing, strong analytical skills, and a willingness to dig into complex problems. Responsibilities Provide legal and regulatory support for day-to-day mortgage lending and servicing operations Assist with issue-specific remediation projects, including documenting rationale and actions taken Support review and response to escalated homeowner disputes and complaints Draft or review customer-facing documents and homeowner communications Support senior counsel in managing interactions with clients, regulators, and investors, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mae, and state agencies Assist in preparing responses to external exams and audits Help identify risk areas and support mitigation efforts Provide legal input on product and process development in collaboration with internal stakeholders Help provide support for fair lending initiatives and HMDA reporting Monitor servicing operations for compliance with applicable laws and investor requirements Stay informed of regulatory changes and mortgage trends Collaborate with teams across operations, product, and engineering Ideal Background Familiarity with the mortgage industry, including core regulatory frameworks Experience advising on UDAAP and servicing-related compliance matters Working knowledge of federal and state mortgage servicing regulations, including Reg X and Reg Z Exposure to drafting or updating policies, procedures, and internal guidance documents Excellent communication and organizational skills Collaborative mindset and ability to partner effectively across functions Minimum Qualifications Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state Minimum of 3 years of legal experience, preferably in a law firm or in-house legal department with a focus on mortgage, financial services, or regulatory matters Minimum Education: Juris Doctor (JD) Benefits Compensation: Competitive salary and a 401(k) planwith a 4% annual match!
