Carpentry Journeyman
Under the supervision of the Park Manager in charge of the Cave of the Winds for the Niagara Reservation, the incumbent will perform journey level work in the primary trade of carpentry. Duties include, but are not limited to: Perform journey-level carpentry work, including the installation, removal, maintenance, and repair of deck and stair structures within the attraction. Supervise, train, and oversee the daily activities of permanent and seasonal staff, ensuring all tasks are completed safely and efficiently. Utilize and maintain a variety of hand tools and small equipment necessary for construction and repair work. Operate park machinery and vehicles, including tractors, trucks, excavators, and skid steers. Provide excellent customer service by interacting with patrons in a professional and helpful manner, answering questions, and offering assistance as needed. Track and document materials used during maintenance tasks. Conduct daily inspections and report on the condition of park facilities and equipment. During the off-season, report to the warehouse for tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, prepping, staining, stacking, and transporting new and old lumber. Although the work of the position is periodically inspected by the Park Manager, the incumbent is expected to work with considerable independence as is typical of a craftsperson. Minimum Qualifications: Four years of full-time experience** in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, OR equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program. * Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training. **If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience. Additional Comments: Operating Needs: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment. Must be able to work a variable schedule which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays. The selected candidate will be required to obtain certification in First Aide, CPR and AED. Must have the physical ability to carry tools and materials considerable distances to work sites inaccessible by vehicle when needed. Must have the working knowledge in the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry, building trades and safety procedures. Must have good communication skills and be comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people. Must have the ability to supervise and train others. Must have experience in the operation of fork trucks. Must possess basic computer and typing skills.
