Section Chief of Hematology
The Lewis Katz School of Medicine is seeking an accomplished and dynamic physician leader to serve as the Section Chief of Hematology within the Department of Medicine. This leadership role will involve fostering a collaborative, innovative, and academically rigorous environment, with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence, research, and education. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with the Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Sol Sherry Research Center, enhancing the integration of clinical care and cutting-edge research in hematology. The individual in this position will lead a team of hematologists, collaborate with other medical and administrative departments, and ensure the highest standards of patient care, education, and scholarly work in the field of hematology. The Section Chief will provide clinical guidance, mentorship to faculty, fellows, and residents, and foster an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. This role requires strong leadership, expertise in hematology, and the ability to engage with academic, clinical, and research communities effectively. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Management Represent the hematology section in departmental, institutional, and external meetings, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and initiatives and manage the sections budget and resources, ensuring efficient allocation and compliance with institutional financial goals. Provide senior clinical leadership for the Hematology Section, fostering a culture of academic excellence and clinical innovation. Develop and implement strategic goals aligned with LKSOM and the Departments mission and vision. Oversee recruitment, mentoring, and career development of faculty, fellows, and staff. Clinical Care Maintain and enhance high-quality patient care services (both inpatient and outpatient) in hematology, with an emphasis on thrombosis and non-malignant hematology. Collaborate with Fox Chase Cancer Center to integrate and expand hematology-oncology clinical services across the Health System. Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction metrics to identify areas for improvement and, along with the Departments Vice Chair of Quality, Safety and Innovation, oversee quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care, safety, and outcomes. Research The Section Chief and faculty are members of the Sol Sherry Research Center and Fox Chase Cancer Center at Temple University Hospital. The Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center has a vibrant and interdisciplinary research program focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of thrombosis and hemostasis and developing new therapeutic strategies for blood diseases. As such, the Section Chief will: Promote and support research activities, including basic, translational, and clinical research within the section. Foster collaborative research efforts with the Sol Sherry Research Center and other affiliated institutions. Secure extramural funding and lead significant research initiatives. Education The Chief is tasked with driving the achievement of quality and educational objectives, actively participating in faculty development, and mentoring medical students and post-graduate trainees As such, the Section Chief of Hematology will: Oversee and contribute to the educational programs, including fellowship training and medical student/resident education. Mentor junior faculty, fellows, and residents in clinical and research activities. Collaboration Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Sol Sherry Research Center. Participate in multi-disciplinary initiatives to advance hematology care and research. Specific Responsibilities Lead the Section of Hematology in the tripartite mission of cutting-edge clinical care, education, and research. Ensure a world-class educational experience and mentorship to medical students, residents, and fellows in hematology. Promote a strong culture of institutional responsibility, including a commitment to excellent, efficient, and effective business operations and the use of space. Encourage and support diversity among the Sections constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, and acceptance. Promote a culture of engagement, mission, lifelong learning, and professional development among departmental staff. Work with the Department Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, Department Chair, and Senior Associate Dean, Office of Faculty Affairs, to define plans for the development of each faculty member and perform annual review meetings with each Hematology faculty member. Support the promotion of faculty during the promotion process through mentorship, guidance, and advocacy. Participate in departmental, School of Medicine, and hospital committees as assigned by the Department Chair and Dean of LKSOM Ensure patient-focused, efficient, effective, and safe clinical care. Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care, safety, and outcomes. Develop programs that reduce barriers to care amongst the patients served by Temple Health. Manage the resources of the Section to ensure sustainable and effective programs. Promote community outreach, community feedback, and collaboration with community-based organizations. Ensure compliance with all clinical standards, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies. Stay up to date with advancements in hematology and integrate emerging practices into clinical care and departmental policies. Reporting Structure/Key Relationships The Section Chief of Hematology is accountable directly to the Chair, Medicine, LKSOM Educational Requirements and Minimum Qualifications This position requires an M.D., D.O., or foreign equivalent. Board certification or eligibility through the American Board of Internal Medicine is preferred. Successful completion of residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology from an ACGME-accredited program is preferred. International post-graduate medical education may be considered in lieu of an ACGME accredited residency and fellowship. Qualified candidates must possess credentials for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor in the medical school and have an outstanding clinical care, research, scholarship, and mentoring/education record. Candidates should be active participants in specialty organizations/committees at the regional and national levels and can obtain medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
