Field Maintenance Operator

Operates heavy equipment for the Field Maintenance Division, maintaining paint and pavement on runways, taxiways, ramp, and other paved areas at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Primarily operates truck-mounted and walk behind paint striper, crack sealer and crack router. May operate the following as needed by assignments: dozer, tandem dump truck, rubber tire loader, track loader, flusher truck, sweeper truck, asphalt rollers, back-hoes, airfield tractor, walk behind concrete/asphalt saw, broom tractor, and large street sweeper. May serve as lead operator for other workers in the absence of the supervisor. Inspects assigned equipment for readiness and safety. Completes related records and reports. Performs related manual labor. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Repairs and maintains painted and paved areas by operating truck-mounted and walk behind paint striper, crack sealers, and crack routers. Serves as lead operator when required. Operates the following as needed by assignment: flusher truck, street sweeper, backhoe, tractor, bat wing mower, front-end loader, and tandem dump truck. Inspects assigned equipment for readiness and safety. Completes related records and reports. Performs related manual labor. Perform job duties while complying with TSA security requirements. Perform job duties that require operating vehicles or heavy equipment in/on and around active runway and taxiway environments while following instructions provided by FAA traffic controllers and following airfield signage, lighting, and paint marking instructions. General Information: Hours of work are 3rd shift, 8:00 pm-6:00 am, Sunday through Thursday. Ability to work other times and overtime when required by assignment, inclement weather, or urgent/emergency situations. Subject to emergency calls back to work. Valid CDL-B with no more than 6 points. Tanker vehicle endorsement and CDL-A, or the ability to obtain within one year of employment. Ability to obtain a tractor/trailer endorsement within one year. Ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit. Ability to acquire AMA (Airfield Movement Area) endorsement within six months of employment. Successful candidate must successfully pass and obtain Movement Area Training (MAT) Endorsement within the first 6 months of employment in order to maintain employment. Certain criminal convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude them from employment. Minimum Qualifications: No minimum level plus seven years of experience High school graduate or equivalent plus five years of experience CDL-B requires the ability to obtain CDL-A and Tank Endorsement within 12 months Preferred Qualification: High School graduation/GED and at five three year experience operating one or more pieces of equipment mentioned previously, or if no high school diploma/GED, seven years of experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work/industry/military/job specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties. Additional experience in airfield paint markings related to FAA 139 Certification and the operation of several pieces of heavy equipment mentioned previously is desirable. Must be familiar with or have the ability to become familiar with FAA part 139 standard requirements for the airfield environment, TSA airport security requirements, and FAA part 77 standard requirements. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be able to read and write sufficiently to complete records and reports. Must have exceptional equipment operating skills and airfield striping experience related to the FAA 139 Certification Program. Knowledge of safety precautions and work hazards involved in the operation of equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in the operation of equipment. Knowledge of concrete and asphalt work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner with airport tenants and the public. Skills to be able to read and write sufficiently to complete records and reports. ADA and Other Requirements: Physical Requirements: Spends 70% of the time operating and driving heavy equipment. Performs related manual labor during the remainder of the time. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50lbs. Work involves sitting, standing, bending, walking, driving, climbing, lifting, carrying, shoveling, twisting, reaching, and kneeling/squatting. Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to operate manual and automatic vehicles. Works inside and outside. Exposed to machinery, moving objects, vehicles, dust, slippery and uneven surfaces, excessive noise, vibrating tools, and inclement weather. Works shifts and irregular hours.
