Patent Manager
Johnson & Johnson is currently seeking a Patent Manager to join our Global Legal Organization located in Spring House, PA, San Diego, CA, or New Brunswick, NJ. The Patent Manager uses scientific and technical expertise to serve as the primary point of contact between the in-house patent legal group and the various groups within Research & Development that develop new products and discover new technology. This person collaborates with members of the legal group to identify business innovations and enable commercially significant inventions to be protected by valid patents, while avoiding infringement of valid third party patents. This person utilizes extensive knowledge of Johnson & Johnson's patent portfolios and the activities of its competitors to inform business decisions. With oversight from a patent attorney, the patent liaison provides advice and direction on patent matters to the Research & Development teams as they discover and develop innovative solutions to profoundly impact patient's lives. Key Responsibilities
Performs extensive critical reviews of patents, patent applications, patent amendments, patent opinions and other patent-related documents for technical accuracy and full protection of company inventions. Leads communication between research & development laboratories and patent attorneys. Collaborates closely with research & development personnel to perform comprehensive searches of patent databases for invalidity, patentability, landscape and freedom to operate searches. Performs technical analysis of third party's patents in distinct technology areas to identify and/or assess potential third party patent considerations. Ensures detailed instruction is provided to researchers and inventors regarding legal requirements for a patentable invention. Assists in construction and submission of extensive invention disclosures. Collaborates with patent attorneys and paralegals to draft and prosecute patent applications. Provides guidance to research & development and commercial personnel regarding patent and trade secret matters and displays ability to independently identify and develop intellectual property strategies bring new solutions to patients. Develops and maintains a deep understanding of the business, including the research area, technologies being used, products being developed, licensed-in or acquired assets, the current commercial products and existing intellectual property portfolio. Attends and participates in Law Department, research & development and business meetings related to such activities. Qualifications
Education:
Minimum of a Masters degree or ten years of industrial laboratory experience with a Bachelors degree in chemistry, such as medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry or related field of study is required. Experience and Skills:
Required:
Excellent organizational, interdependent partnering and project management skills are required. Ability to communicate effectively, as well as strong interpersonal skills, are required. Proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and OneNote) and ChemDraw is required. Experience searching using Scifinder and Derwent databases as well as patent databases is required. Qualified to sit for the United States Patent and Trademark Office patent bar exam. Preferred:
Currently registered as a U.S. patent agent Experience drafting patent applications and prosecuting patents is preferred. Three or more years of experience working as a patent agent, patent liaison or scientific advisor role in a corporate law department and/or law firm Other:
