Talladega County Schools Talladega, Alabama POSITION: Itinerant School Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) REPORTS TO: Principal Supervising Registered Nurse JOB GOAL: To support student success by providing health education, health care assessment, intervention and follow-up for all children in the school setting. QUALIFICATIONS: Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the Alabama Board of Nursing. Ability to attend required professional development as necessary to renew professional nursing license through the Alabama Board of Nursing. This continuing education should be related to school nursing and/or school health fields. Three to five years' experience in school nursing, public health, education or pediatrics preferred. Current CPR and Medication Assistant Training. (This could be obtained soon after employment). Ability and experience to work effectively with all ages, but particularly with the school-age population. Proficient at organizational and goal-setting skills. Valid Alabama Driver's license. Ability to communicate accurately and effectively with students, parents, staff and community. Ability to work independently and collaborate with community partners. Capable and willing to assist in planning, organizing and implementing a school health program for the school. Ability to coordinate the implementation of health policies and procedures for the school system. Current and complete application on file. Approved background check conducted by Fieldprint. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Works under the supervision of the designated licensed registered nurse. Assists in planning, implementing and monitoring a comprehensive school health program. Serves as a resource person for students with health needs. Reports suspected child neglect/abuse in accord with State Law. Assists with maintenance and monitoring of school health records. Assists with planning and implementing health education programs for students, staff and parents. Consults with other health care providers as appropriate (physicians and public health officials). Maintains system of inventory for medical supplies and equipment. Provides staff development relevant to health needs of students. Assists teachers in obtaining materials and resources to enhance school health education programs. Monitors health needs of students. Schedules home visits as appropriate. Provides medical treatment of health problem within the scope of nursing practice. Assists in developing and implementing a plan for responding to emergencies and disasters. Coordinates health screenings. Actively participates on LEA Interdisciplinary teams such as Problem Solving Teams (PST), Individual Education Program Committees (IEP's) and 504 teams for students with special health needs. Interprets medical and nursing findings for school personnel. Assists in developing and implementing school health policies and guidelines such as medicine administration, communicable disease and crisis management. Monitors compliance with immunization laws. Assesses and manages communicable health problems in the school population such as head lice, scabies and impetigo. Collaborates with other school personnel, parents and care givers to meet health, developmental and educational needs of students. Participates in professional development in the school nursing profession. Honors code of confidentiality with students and families. Works with other nurses in the school system when applicable. Maintains required records. Compiles and submits periodic reports and evaluations regarding status of program within assigned school(s). Operates only under the Alabama Board of Nursing Guidelines. Performs other appropriate duties as may be assigned. Uphold and enforce Talladega County Board of Education policy. EVALUATION: Evaluation will be completed by supervisor as outlined for support staff in the Talladega County Board of Education policy. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 187 days
