Alternative Breaks Assistant Director
The purpose of this position is to promote community service and cultural exchange on the local, national, and international levels through direct service and immersion programs. The Alternative Breaks Assistant Director will facilitate and direct student efforts to heighten social awareness about concrete social challenges faced by poor and marginalized communities and empower students to approach service as a mutually-transforming partnership with the community being served. This position will help students reflect on what it means to be a global citizen committed to service and justice. This position reports to the Associate Director of Student Engagement in the Pam Rector Center for Service and Action. Responsibilities include: Manage more than 6-10 in person trips annually, including risk management, budgeting, assessing agency for capacity, and infrastructure for participants (Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer). Develop and maintain relationships with host communities (domestic and international) that present diverse opportunities for service, immersion, and mutual exchange. Recruit, train, and supervise all student leaders for trips as well as student, staff, and faculty participants. Supervise the student staff in CSA who work with Alternative Breaks, as well as the CSA Advocacy Coordinators. Develop co-sponsorships of AB trips with colleges and departments, student organizations, and faculty. Manage all financial aspects of the program. This includes: Budgeting, student payments, payments to agencies, individual trip expense reports, and scholarship funds. Ensure each immersion opportunity complies with LMU policies regarding safety, liability, and risk management. Facilitate opportunities for personal and group reflection before, during, and after trips. Accompany students to Washington DC for the Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN) Family Teach-In. Work with students upon return to LMU to run the CSA Advocacy Teach-In for the LMU community in the spring semester. Facilitate on campus justice and advocacy events for students. Design and execute various one day LA immersions for students. Continuously monitor news and developments in international policy, global development, higher education, and security topics that may influence trip design. Program events that invite the entire university community to consider and participate in various aspects of civic engagement and social justice advocacy. Serve on university and divisional committees as assigned or requested. Facilitate leadership trainings for Alternative Breaks trip leaders. Perform other duties related to student engagement, leadership, and service as assigned or requested. Requisite Qualifications Typically a Masters Degree in student development, higher education administration, social work, public administration, non-profit leadership or another related field or equivalent experience. A minimum of three to four years experience working in international development, the non-profit sector, student immersion program management, and/or higher education programming. Experience in experiential education. Demonstrated knowledge of and capacity to articulate the value of students and faculty engaging in advocacy and justice work with nonprofit community organizations locally, nationally, and globally. High level of cultural competency, including sensitivity to issues of race, class, and the ethical dilemmas that may arise from the development of strong reciprocal campus and community partnerships. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community leaders. Knowledge, openness, and ability to animate LMU's Jesuit Catholic mission, vision, and values. Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of MS Word, Excel, social media tools, on-line survey software, and web page publisher systems.
