Student Engineer, Portland, OR

The Grid Modernization team is looking for a data science intern to support initiatives that improve the reliability, resilience, and intelligence of the electric grid. In this role, you will apply data analysis, machine learning, and visualization techniques to critical grid modernization efforts, including advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), wildfire mitigation, electric vehicle (EV) planning, and fault detection analytics. You'll collaborate with engineers, analysts, and utility operations staff to help extract insights from large datasets and contribute to the transformation of utility infrastructure and services. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in the intersection of energy systems, data science, and sustainability. Join our Grid Modernization team as a Data Science Intern and contribute to projects that support the transition to a more intelligent, reliable, and sustainable electric grid. This role is ideal for a student interested in applying data science, analytics, and modeling techniques to real-world utility challenges, including wildfire mitigation, EV integration, fault detection, AMI analytics, and improving grid reliability. Responsibilities

Assist data scientists and engineers in analyzing grid performance and reliability using data from AMI meters, SCADA systems, and outage management systems. Support fault detection initiatives by developing models to identify abnormal grid behavior and potential equipment failures using real-time and historical data. Contribute to wildfire mitigation efforts by analyzing vegetation risk, weather patterns, and protection system activity. Conduct electric vehicle (EV) impact analysis, including load forecasting and charging behavior insights. Clean, process, and visualize large datasets to support engineering studies related to transmission and distribution systems. Develop and automate dashboards, reports, and tools to support decision-making across the Grid Modernization group. Conduct exploratory data analysis and communicate insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Support the review and maintenance of engineering documentation, specifications, and network data. Research new tools, methods, and technologies relevant to modern grid operations and resilience. Requirements

Enrolled full-time in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in data science, electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or other STEM fields with relevant coursework or experience in analytics, modeling, or energy systems. Standing as a sophomore or higher (juniors and seniors preferred). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with interest in power systems, grid infrastructure, or wildfire/EV/fault detection challenges. Experience with Python, SQL, and data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau. Effective communicator with the ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams. Demonstrated ability to manage time and priorities in a fast-paced, project-driven environment. Passion for energy, sustainability, and modernizing the electric grid.
