Head Custodian
The head building custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the building and grounds as well as the safe operation of the school, including necessary care of all equipment, furniture, grounds, etc. Also consults with the supervisor of the building and grounds regarding supplies, housekeeping, maintenance, repair and other custodial matters. Duties and responsibilities include: Opening the building and ensuring that it is properly heated and ready for occupants by 7:00 a.m. Raising and lowering the flag (weather permitting). Checking the operation of HVAC equipment. Receiving all supplies for the building, checking purchase orders against supplies and helping to store items at the direction of the Principal. Keeping walks and entrances free from dirt, water, snow and obstructions. Replacing all lamps and fluorescent tubes, as required. Reporting equipment failures and abuse of furniture to the Principal. Setting up multi-purpose room or other areas for meetings as requested by the Principal. Performing other head custodial-related duties as may be necessary to insure the availability of the building for occupancy, including weekends and evenings. Taking bids for construction and maintenance from contractors. Supervising and approving completed work. Sanitizing pool as needed. Responsible for landscaping and grounds care. Taking various inspectors through building and answering questions about the facility. (Health Dept., Elevator inspectors, fire extinguisher techs, etc.) Taking classes and becoming certified when required. (Example- Pool operator certification, Pesticide Certification) On call 24/7 for emergencies and must be at the Special Education Center to address issues, if necessary, in accordance with the pool certification guidelines or any other building emergency. Supervising the Custodians with the day to day responsibilities of the position. Assisting maintenance personnel, as required. Reviewing custodial time sheets prior to submission to office. Communicating maintenance, repair, and updated schedules with building Principal. Assisting building Principal with the development of a preliminary maintenance budget. Maintaining the Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Ordering cleaning supplies and paper products as needed. Performing other duties as assigned and complying with the building Principal's requests within reasonable time limits. Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED required, Associate's degree preferred. Three years of progressive custodial experience in physical operation and maintenance of school buildings, grounds and equipment. Certification as a Pool Operator preferred. Must become certified within 6 months of employment (Pathfinder and Mon Valley). Allegheny County Certification and State Pesticide Test preferred. Must become certified within one year of employment. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred. Training in Universal Precautions preferred. Working knowledge of office machines (copier, fax, telephone, etc.). Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work under pressure. Ability to be flexible and perform other tasks as assigned. Basic experience with computers including email and related software needed for control of HVAC systems. Ability to effectively present information and articulately respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, business and education partners, and the general public. Additional requirements: Current Act 114, Act 34 Act 151 and NSOR clearances are required prior to an offer (Must be dated within 1 year of hire date). School Personnel Health Record (Form H511.340) must be completed and received by Human Resources prior to hire date.
