Since our founding in 2023, we've developed fuel cycle technologies to deliver fusion energy more quickly with better economics. Marathon Fusion was founded by Adam Rutkowski, previously a Propulsion Engineer at SpaceX and PhD candidate in Plasma Physics at Princeton University, and Kyle Schiller, previously a Fellow in science policy at Schmidt Futures. We believed then, and now more than ever, that fusion is humanity's best pathway to abundant, clean and reliable energy.

We've secured over $10m in funding from the US Department of Energy and leading investors including 1517 Fund and Strong Atomics. We have letters of intent from leading fusion companies including Helion Energy, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, and Thea Energy.

We've built plasma centrifuges for isotope separation, superpermeable pumps for rapid fuel recycling in fusion power plants. We're on a quest to commercialize alchemy, accelerate the deployment of fusion energy, and open a new frontier in scientific discovery.

Role Description

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our technology. You'll lead mechanical design efforts for intricate components and assemblies, guiding them from early-stage concepts to scalable production, with a strong emphasis on design for manufacturing. This role demands a highly creative problem-solver adept at overcoming complex mechanical design hurdles. You'll be instrumental in collaborating with diverse teams, establishing critical requirements, and orchestrating comprehensive verification plans. Thriving in a dynamic prototype shop, you'll also strategically partner with manufacturers to ensure our innovative designs are optimized for seamless production.

What You’ll Do :

• Design hardware in CAD software
• Uphold standards and requirements for ultra-high vacuum environments
• Discover, build relationships with, and vet quality of vendor and supplier partners
• Procure equipment to meet testing requirements, material standards, and project timelines
• Participate in experimental design planning and reviews
• Troubleshoot hardware issues as they arise

What You’ll Bring:

• Degree in mechanical engineering or related field; Bachelor’s with 2+ years, or Master’s with 1+ years industry experience in mechanical design
• Advanced experience with CAD software
• Proficiency with prototyping techniques and outsourcing manufacturing
• Experience as a design lead or program lead on a team of Mechanical Engineers
• Excellent written and oral communication
• Ability to think holistically about systems
• Capacity to learn new technical subjects quickly, collaborate cross-functionally, and consider problems from inter-disciplinary perspectives
• Organization and project management
• A high degree of conscientiousness and integrity

Preferred Experience, But Not Required:

• 4+ years relevant work experience
• Prior experience in the fusion energy or related high-energy industries
• Experience working in a highly ambiguous fast-paced startup or research environment

Compensation and Benefits

Our compensation for this role is a wide range, determined by an evaluation of your experience and qualifications. All compensation packages for full-time employees include equity ownership in Marathon Fusion.

Annual Base Pay

$115,000 to $170,000
