EHDD
We are seeking a passionate and visionary Sustainable Design Leader to advance our firm's environmental stewardship initiatives and lead our Climate Positive commitment. This role will shape our firm's sustainability strategy, deliver high-performance projects, and extend our firm's leadership position in sustainable architecture and design. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in sustainable design consulting and project delivery, with exposure to multiple project types and expertise across scales from individual buildings to campus and community planning.
NOTE: Position could be located in Seattle or San Francisco.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Develop and implement comprehensive sustainability strategies aligned with firm goals and industry best practices.
Lead climate action planning and carbon reduction initiatives across all projects and operations.
Establish sustainability metrics, benchmarks, and reporting systems to track project and portfolio performance.
Collaborate with senior staff and firm leadership to integrate sustainability into project proposals and design development.
Deepen use and engagement with the C.Scale platform across all EHDD projects.
Project Delivery
Provide sustainable design consultation and technical support for projects across various scales and typologies including higher education, K-12, workplace, aquariums, and campus planning.
Support high-performance building initiatives including net-zero energy, carbon neutrality, and whole life carbon emissions.
Conduct building performance analysis and contribute to post-occupancy evaluations.
Ensure projects meet sustainability certification requirements (LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL, AIA 2030, AIA Materials Framework).
Work collaboratively with consulting engineers and specialty consultants to optimize building systems performance.
Support resilience planning and climate adaptation strategies for projects in diverse geographic contexts.
Growth & Development
Engage with clients as a sustainability subject matter expert and trusted advisor.
Represent EHDD in industry conferences, panels, and sustainability forums.
Contribute to publications, case studies, and thought leadership content on sustainable design, including social media.
Grow relationships with potential clients and leverage EHDD's reputation as a sustainability leader.
Serve as primary interface with C.Scale (EHDD's spinout software company) and leverage platform access to pursue new business opportunities.
Manage and mentor junior staff with interest in sustainability.
Oversee sustainability training programs and continuing education initiatives.
Contribute to development of firm-specific sustainability tools, standards, and best practices.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in sustainable design with demonstrated project delivery experience.
Track record supporting high-performance building projects and sustainability initiatives.
Background in climate science, data science, or industrial ecology preferred.
Professional Credentials & Technical Skills
LEED AP required; Living Building Challenge Ambassador, Passive House Consultant, or WELL AP credentials preferred.
Professional architecture or engineering registration a plus.
Extensive knowledge of sustainable design principles, green building rating systems, and performance standards.
Proficiency with whole building life cycle assessment and LCA tools (C.Scale, Tally, One Click LCA, EC3).
Experience with computational design tools and parametric modeling for sustainability optimization.
Deep understanding of building systems, renewable energy technologies, sustainable materials, and embodied carbon.
Knowledge of daylighting analysis, thermal comfort modeling, and indoor environmental quality assessment.
Energy modeling software experience preferred but not required.
Leadership & Communication Skills
Strong collaborative and teamwork skills with experience supporting multidisciplinary teams.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present technical information clearly.
Project coordination skills with ability to manage multiple assignments.
Interest in client relationship building and business development.
