GENERAL DESCRIPTION

As the Department Lead Structural Engineer, the successful candidate must be competent in leading, performing, and directing all aspects of a Structural Engineering Department. They must also be capable of leading complex projects and applying judgment for the evaluation, selection, and adaptation of design standards, criteria, and analysis procedures. Supervisory responsibilities include oversight and accountability for the structural team's performance, providing technical guidance and coordination for staff assigned to multiple projects or varying sizes, mentoring and developing staff, interviewing, and recruiting potential new hires.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as the direct supervisor of the company's structural department, responsible for the supervision and technical direction of a team of engineers and designers engaged in completing structural deliverables and services to meet project schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
Lead, assign, and coordinate structural staff work, overseeing quality and adequacy of work products, ensuring projects are on schedule and within budget.
Perform advanced engineering tasks and serve as a technical specialist for complex assignments.
Act as Engineer of Record on projects and as engineer in responsible charge, as necessary.
Interface directly with clients and vendors.
Oversee the creation and development of all deliverables, including preliminary estimate packages (FEL2, FEL3), design drawings for review and construction, and scopes of work.
Oversee the development of structural drawings and 3D models created in Revit and AutoCAD, coordinating interfaces between structures, other engineering disciplines, and vendors.
Perform structural design reviews related to constructability, safety, and maintenance, making decisions to improve project outcomes and reduce costs.
Review shop drawings and construction submittals as required, providing technical guidance.
Conduct internal quality control reviews of project deliverables.
Participate in value engineering, scope, and budget reconciliation.
Support the development of project proposals.
Coordinate and maintain engineering and drafting standards, including specifications, design standards, and technical resources such as codes and referenced standards.
Assist in developing proposals and determining structural engineering budgets.
QUALIFICATIONS / QUALITIES
15 to 20 years of professional experience in structural engineering, with at least 15 years specific to industrial projects.
Bachelor's degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
Professional Engineering (PE) License; Structural Engineering (SE) License preferred.
Willingness to maintain professional engineering licenses in multiple states, as required.
Experience working and coordinating with other disciplines including piping, mechanical, electrical, and process engineering.
Experience with scope evaluation, establishing budgets, and understanding complex schedules.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide practical solutions expediently.
Working knowledge of current US building codes, reference standards, and conventional structural building products.
Knowledge of OSHA standards related to fall prevention, maintenance access, and egress.
Technical expertise in structural engineering, including:
Concrete, steel, and masonry structures.
Deep and shallow foundations, interpreting geotechnical requirements.
Seismic analysis and detailing, shear walls, braced and rigid frames.
Evaluation and retrofit of existing structures.
Support and anchorage of vessels and equipment.
Lifting beams, below-the-hook devices, and fall arrest support structures.
Vibration evaluation and mitigation.
Site civil design related to process drainage.
Proficiency with software such as:
Structural analysis and design software (RISA-3D, STAADpro, Enercalc).
MS Office applications, including Teams.
Custom engineering tools with MS Excel and/or Mathcad.
Bluebeam Revu.
Navisworks platform and point scans for 3D environments.
Additional skills include:
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work well in a team, in a fast-paced, diverse environment.
Willingness to learn and implement new standards and approaches.
Ability to travel up to 25% as required.
Must pass drug test, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record.
US Citizenship and Valid US Driver’s License.
Typical duties are performed in an office environment with occasional travel to facilities or sites. Ability to sit for extended periods, stand, walk, reach, climb, and balance is required. Lifting objects up to 25 pounds may be necessary.
