Position Summary: The
Director of Construction – BESS
will lead the planning, execution, and delivery of all construction activities for battery energy storage projects. This leadership role requires deep knowledge of utility-scale construction practices, strong team management, and proven experience in managing multi-million-dollar energy projects from pre-construction through commissioning. You will work cross-functionally with development, engineering, procurement, and operations teams to ensure successful and timely delivery of high-quality BESS projects in compliance with safety, quality, budget, and schedule goals. Key Responsibilities: Lead end-to-end construction management for BESS projects across the U.S., with a primary focus on projects in the Midwest. Oversee all field construction activities, contractors, and site personnel to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. Develop and manage construction budgets, schedules, and execution plans. Collaborate closely with internal teams (Development, Engineering, Procurement) during project design and planning phases. Select and manage EPC contractors, subcontractors, and vendors; participate in contract negotiations and performance oversight. Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and permitting requirements. Identify construction risks and develop mitigation strategies to address delays, cost overruns, or quality concerns. Implement QA/QC standards and procedures across all project sites. Lead weekly construction progress meetings and provide executive-level updates and reporting. Support commissioning and handover to operations teams post-construction. Travel to project sites as needed (approximately 30-50%). Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred. 10+ years of experience in utility-scale construction, with 3+ years in BESS, solar, or renewable energy projects. Proven leadership in managing large-scale infrastructure projects ($50M+). Deep understanding of construction management best practices, safety compliance (OSHA), and permitting processes. Familiarity with BESS technologies, electrical systems (HV/MV), and interconnection procedures. Strong ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and external partners across multiple projects. Proficiency in project management tools (Primavera P6, MS Project, Procore, etc.). Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Willingness to travel as needed. Preferred Qualifications: PE, PMP, or other relevant certifications. Prior experience managing EPC contracts for battery or hybrid (solar + storage) projects. Understanding of utility interconnection processes in PJM, MISO, or similar markets. Seniority level
