About this Role: Experienced / ambitious Design Manager required to work with a leading Tier 1 main contractor to manage the design process for several DIO defence projects currently in second stage preconstruction and due to commence on site mid 2026 in several location across Salisbury Plain. Based initially in the Southampton office, you will be involved in the preconstruction phase for your scheme/s prior to moving to site with the project team throughout the construction works. Reporting to the Preconstruction Manager and working closely with the Framework Manager for Defence as well as with the wider preconstruction team, you will manage the design development for schemes through second stage, engaging with client, stakeholders and end users; Thereafter you will take full responsibility for your live site/s working closely with the project delivery team throughout the construction phase. Duties will include: Management of design development for your projects, Chairing regular design team meetings; Management of consultant design team; Regular liaison with key clients, stakeholders and end users; Engagement with and managing specialist sub-contractor design teams; Agreement of information required schedule; Ensuring key dates achieved; Review of construction design information for buildability, compliance with contractors proposals, employers requirements, budget, current building legislation, etc; Identifying opportunities for value engineering where appropriate; Proactive issue resolution; Overall managing the smooth and timely delivery of detailed design information for procurement and construction throughout the preconstruction and build process. About the Company: This role is to work with the regional office of a busy Tier 1 national main contractor, with experience and a proven track record in the delivery of new build and refurbishment schemes in defence, primary and secondary education, healthcare, higher education faculty buildings, student accommodation, blue light, etc. Project values are typically £15m to £50m in the Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset regions. Turnover is circa £70-80m for the region. Requirements including certificates and qualifications: Either from an Engineering/Construction delivery or Architectural background, you will possess excellent technical and commercial knowledge, a keen understanding of construction methodology, materials and systems, procurement lead in times, etc. You will have excellent communication and negotiations skills, strong planning and problem solving ability, initiative and a positive approach. In terms of character, you will be a highly driven, positive and ambitious individual able to work well within a large team dynamic. This role involves a great deal of client interface and positive relationship building to successfully convert and deliver the projects, plus maximise the benefit of this ongoing framework for both parties. There is a significant pipeline of works to be completed over the next 5-10 years in this region. You will ideally have a proven track record of successful project delivery with a recognised Main Contractor in a Design Management role, plus previous experience of defence projects and working in a live MOD environment would be advantageous.
