Quantum Compiler Engineer

Our compiler team is at the forefront of bridging the gap between groundbreaking quantum applications and the unparalleled computing power of quantum machines. As a Quantum Compiler Test and Performance Engineer, you are invited to join an interdisciplinary team of physicists and software developers dedicated to transforming platform agnostic quantum algorithms into concrete, executable instructions tailored for our state-of-the-art trapped-ion quantum computers.
In this role, you will engage in pioneering work, collaborating closely with compiler specialists to forge user-friendly languages and tools designed for crafting quantum programs. Your expertise will be instrumental in advancing the development of sophisticated heuristics and algorithms. These innovations are critical for optimizing the routing of ions across complex topologies, significantly enhancing the speed and efficiency of quantum applications executed on our platforms.
You'll have the opportunity to contribute across the compiler stack including front-end language tooling, mid-level optimization passes (quantum and classical), and hardware-aware backends, with a special focus on performance, correctness, and robustness. This is an opportunity to own non-trivial compiler innovations, experiment with heuristics and approximation strategies, and influence how quantum programs scale.
Key Responsibilities:
Contribute to the development of compiler front-end (quantum languages), back-end (machine-specific targeting), and optimization (quantum circuit optimization and classical optimization) passes operating on both classical and quantum operations Benchmark, profile, and optimize the execution of our compiler and the quality and performance of quantum programs it generates including responsibility for tracking and improving time-to-solution and solution quality for implemented routing algorithms Collaborate on the design and implementation of a compiler targeting a real-time, distributed execution environment Work with a diverse team including physicists and other engineering disciplines to solve complex problems Write high quality, maintainable code in an R&D and rapid prototyping environment YOU MUST HAVE:
Bachelor's Degree in CS Minimum 2+ years in compiler fundamentals and a strong understanding of compiler design Ability to understand, combine, and apply algorithms to solve complex problems Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen. Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. person (defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status) WE VALUE:
Ability to solve complex problems and ability to communicate how you did it Track-record using python or other rapid prototyping and development tools to solve complex challenges Rust development experience especially including any LLVM or optimization algorithm development Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of algorithms, including tree, graph, SAT, and, at times Machine Learning and other algorithms Experience with the development of application-specific algorithms, especially where exact/optimal solutions are computationally intractable Proficiency with software testing and deployment tools
