Deckhand Job Overview

The deckhand is responsible for assisting work on deck; inclusive of line handling, on and off watch, perform deck and engine security rounds, may have assigned security duties and emergency duties, and other duties assigned as required by the Vessel Master or Mate. Essential functions include adhering to company policies, USCG, and environmental regulations; representing the organization to guests, customers, the public, and government; and possessing good seaman skills including proper vessel line handling. The able bodied seaman performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment, including scaling, buffing, and painting decks and superstructure; sweeping and washing decks; splicing wire and rope; breaking out, rigging, overhauling, and stowing cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear; securing cargo; launching and recovering boats; and possibly rigging and operating hydrographic and other specialty winches. When assigned to watch duty, the deckhand performs a variety of duties, including looking for obstructions in the vessel's path, steering the vessel, serving on security patrol, and standing gangway watch. Responsibilities

Knowledge and critical skills/expertise include the ability to complete an annual Merchant Mariners physical exam and perform physically demanding shipboard duties; communication skills to explain complex or technical matters; writing skills to communicate technical information; and strong interpersonal/team skills to deal with situations requiring immediate low-level satisfactory resolution of issues. Qualifications

Requirements include USCG rating as Able Body Seaman Limited with STCW-95 endorsements in Basic Safety Training and Lifeboatman; U.S. citizenship and a current U.S. passport; minimum of 1-3 years of experience in the maritime industry with progressively responsible experience; valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) with at least six months prior to renewal; valid passport with at least six months prior to renewal; and valid driver's license with at least six months prior to renewal. Rotational schedule: 30-60 days on and off depending on the job. Work shifts are 6/6/6/6 hours on and off throughout the day each day. UIC is an equal opportunity employer. EOE/AA/M/F/D/V Physical demands include the ability to write, read, calculate, have estimation skills, possess good verbal presentation, communicate using the English language, and perform repetitive and prolonged postures involving standing, sitting, twisting, squatting, kneeling, stooping, and reaching. Employee must have good dexterity, balance, and coordination to safely walk over catwalks, enter/exit hatches, and over uneven and/or slippery surfaces. Must be able to climb ladders, stairwells, and push knees. Must be able to step with a step length of 2-ft. in the horizontal direction and 2-ft. in the vertical direction. Must be able to step across, up, down, or over an obstacle in order to gain access to the dock from the barge or from the barge to the boat or from the boat to the dock. Must be able to safely walk and carry tools and line while crossing pipes, ledges, sills, catwalks, and/or climbing ladders and push knees. Must be able to work in cold/hot weather while wearing required PPE (e.g., life preserver, respirators, goggles, etc.). Must be able to lift at least 65 lbs. from floor to knuckles level on a daily basis. Must be able to lift at least 65 lbs. from floor to waist level on a daily basis. Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs. from floor to shoulder level on a daily basis. Must be able to lift at least 10 lbs. from floor to crown level on a daily basis. Must be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs. with two hands at waist level for a minimum distance of 30 feet on a level surface. Environmental conditions include cramped, confined spaces, working in fog, dark, and other visibility limiting conditions, exposure to fuels, solvents, cleaners, dust, fumes, smoke, and gases, working on vessels in adverse weather conditions, constant and loud engine, blowers, and exhaust noise, irregular working hours, vibrations from vessel engines, arctic marine environment including low temperatures, high wind, icing, plenty of moisture and wave action, and frequent hazards including hypothermia, pinch points, sprains, strains, slips, falls, concussive impacts, and lifting injuries.
