Senior Analyst, Tax Data Automation

OpenAI's Tax function is transforming traditional compliance into a fully autonomous, tech-enabled capability. Our team partners with Finance, Legal, and Infrastructure to manage global tax obligations, drive automation, and embed rigorous controls. We thrive on systems thinking, cross-functional collaboration, and the innovative use of AI to eliminate manual workflows and accelerate reporting cycles. Our team is first and foremost a tax function, and every member is expected to bring strong tax technical expertise while leveraging technology to scale. As a Senior Analyst, Tax Data Automation, you will primarily operate as a tax professional within a collaborative team while leveraging technology to enhance processes. This includes designing and optimizing automated data pipelines, executing compliance workflows, and participating directly in tax reporting and compliance work. Your work will ensure: Seamless data integration across equity, payroll, CorpTax, ERP, and internally built tax applications. High-quality, audit-ready data supporting compliance, forecasting, and tax return preparation. Execution of core tax compliance activities, including supporting U.S. federal and state returns, book-tax difference calculations, and R&D tax credit computations. Scalable automation that reduces repetitive tasks and supports multi-agent, AI-driven tax reporting workflows. This role is based in San Francisco. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. In this role you'll: Tax Compliance & Reporting

Prepare and review components of U.S. federal, state, and local income tax returns, including state apportionment calculations and preparation of supporting schedules. Assist with R&D tax credit computations and documentation. Utilize tax return compliance software (such as CorpTax) to manage workflows, validate data, and generate filings. Collaborate with the team to support international compliance and Pillar Two reporting. Participate in state and local tax compliance including apportionment, adjustments, and filing support.

Data Pipeline Design & Automation

Build modular ETL pipelines in Python and SQL to connect intermediary tax outputs to downstream compliance and reporting processes. Integrate ERP, CorpTax, and internally built tax applications, including light-code or no-code custom tax apps, for end-to-end workflows. Build and deploy automated validation, reconciliation, and error-detection controls to maintain data integrity.

Tax Data Engineering & Governance

Partner with Tax Reporting and Finance Data teams to map current-state workflows and identify automation opportunities. Maintain metadata libraries, tax logic repositories, and data lineage documentation to support SOx and ASC 740 compliance. Develop dashboards and audit-ready outputs for compliance, forecasting, and management reporting.

Optimization & Continuous Improvement

Monitor pipeline performance, surface data quality metrics, and proactively tune workflows for efficiency. Support multi-agent automation workflows (data ingestion, classification, aggregation) to reduce manual intervention in future tax filings. Reengineer tax data flows using flow engineering principles to maximize efficiency and scalability.

You might thrive in this role if you: Have a strong foundation in tax, with the technical mindset to drive automation and process improvements. Have proven experience using tax return compliance software, analyzing book-tax differences, calculating R&D credits, and managing state and local tax compliance (including apportionment). Have proficiency in Python and SQL, with hands-on experience building modular ETL pipelines and orchestrating workflows (e.g., dbt). Have deep familiarity with corporate income tax workflows across U.S. federal, state, and international jurisdictions, including ASC 740 and Pillar Two requirements. Are a systems thinker who identifies connections across tax, technology, and business processes to design scalable solutions. Have strong collaboration skills, with the ability to translate complex tax and technical concepts for peers and cross-functional stakeholders.
