Academic Advisor

Compensation: $46,297 annually Employment Type: Regular Grade: E01 Position Summary: This position provides holistic academic advising to first-generation, low-income students, and students with disabilities with the goal to graduate with a certificate or associates degree and transfer to a four-year university within four years. Academic advising is specific to SSS/STEM-H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Health Science) program participants as assigned. Major Duties: Oversees and maintains student information within the program database. Completes student needs assessments. Monitors students who fall below the institutions good academic standing threshold. Prepares and delivers a variety of academic and financial literacy workshops. Develops the monthly TRIO SSS/STEM-H newsletter. Updates the TRIO SSS/STEM-H webpage on the college website. Manages social media applications. Facilitates and plans program events. Monitors the academic progress of program students. Assists and guides students in transferring to a four-year university. Assists in monitoring students utilizing program tutors and the online tutoring program. Monitors peer mentor students in the mentor program. Plans, coordinates, and executes transfer and cultural academic trips. Collaborates with campus department advisors, updates degree or class changes and disseminates information. Updates changes on campus that directly affect the program (e.g., enrollment forms). Assists students in completing the FAFSA and other scholarships. Updates TRIO advisor manual. Manages the program CANVAS page. Recruits students for the program through informational sessions or other like activities. Performs related duties. Knowledge Required by the Position: Knowledge of advising services principles and practices. Knowledge of college degree programs and graduation requirements. Knowledge of campus and community resources. Knowledge of developmental sequence and prerequisite coursework to advance students through their degree programs. Knowledge of college policies and procedures. Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs. Skill in decision making and problem solving. Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Supervisory Controls: The TRIO SSS/STEM-H Program Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Guidelines: Guidelines include the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations and college and program policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. Complexity/Scope of Work: The work consists of varied academic advising duties. The unique needs of each student contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to provide academic advising services to program students. Success in this position results in the efficient and effective provision of those services. Contacts: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons. Physical Demands/Work Environment: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and distinguishes between shades of color. The work is typically performed in an office. Supervisory and Management Responsibility: None. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
