Health Center Director
Milton Academy is seeking applicants for the position of Health Center Director starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. This key leadership role oversees and ensures high-quality medical care for students in grades K12 and manages the school's 24/7 Health Center. The Health Center Director must be a licensed provider who can independently assess, diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a range of acute and chronic conditions affecting children and adolescents. The Health Center Director manages a team of 12 nurses (full-time, part-time, and per diem) who staff a 24/7 health center and two daytime nursing offices during the academic school year. The director provides both routine medical care and emergency services, including oversight of student transportation to external emergency facilities. For boarding students, the Director has historically facilitated care from external providers at Boston Children's Hospital. Working closely with school leadership, the Director of Counseling, the Head Athletic Trainer and external medical consultants, the Health Center Director shapes and implements student health policies, including those related to medication administration, communicable disease prevention, and general health practices. The role also involves organizing and coordinating annual faculty and staff training in CPR, First Aid, and AED use. The Health Center Director collaborates with athletic trainers to provide care and support for student-athletes and manages all administrative aspects of student health, such as handling medical records and ensuring appropriate communication of relevant health information. The ideal candidate will bring clinical expertise, experience working in educational settings, and a demonstrated ability to support diverse student populations across a wide range of ages, identities, and health needs. The individual will also bring the ability to review and assess the structure and performance of the school's approach to delivering care, playing a key role in decision making about the future direction of the school's health services. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight Coordinate a comprehensive health program consistent with Massachusetts regulations and guidelines governing clinical practice and school health. Deliver and oversee clinical care to K-12 students as needed, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. Provide guidance during medical emergencies. Ensure the health center and two academic building satellite locations operate efficiently to meet the needs of day and boarding students, including 24/7 health center operations Direct/oversee the annual student health form review in Magnus, the medical records system. Provide back-up coverage. Be available by phone (on standby) to consult on important clinical issues and questions that may arise throughout the academic year, including overnight and on weekends. Team Leadership Supervise and support a team of approximately 12 nurses (full-time, part-time, and per diem) and Health Center Administrative Coordinator in their efforts to provide timely and high quality clinical care to a diverse group of students, including assessing and identifying team and individual professional development needs (for both clinical and non-clinical competencies), setting goals, and completing performance evaluations. Work closely with the Director of Counseling, Head Athletic Trainer, and other key constituencies to provide integrated student health care. External Partnerships Coordinate primary and any speciality care for boarding students with external medical professionals as needed. Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and primary care providers to establish and maintain the most effective health care plans for students. Administrative Responsibilities Manage the collection, organization, and secure storage of student medical information, including in the electronic medical record, ensuring adherence to privacy laws and school policies. Ensure timely and appropriate communication of student health needs, including medication administration, allergies, and general wellness, to the care team, key stakeholders, and families. Plan and implement preventive services, such as flu clinics and wellness initiatives. Assist with health-related contingency planning and communication, including communicable disease, pandemic response, crisis management, and disaster preparedness. Sit on the school's Emergency Management and Safety Committees. Policy Development and Implementation Direct the development, review, and implementation of best practice policies and procedures regarding medication administration, communicable disease prevention, and overall student health care. This includes response planning for a range of health concerns and medical emergencies. Ensure that the school's approach to student care meets best practice standards, and implement changes accordingly. Maintain compliance with Massachusetts and federal regulations governing school health practices. Training and Education Organize and deliver health education initiatives and wellness programming for K-12 students in collaboration with the Director of Counseling. Supervision
Supervision to be received: Upper School Dean of Students Supervision to be exercised: Nursing Staff, Health Center Administrative Coordinator, contracted Children's Hospital physicians. The role also requires the ability to work collaboratively with other administrators and departments, such as the Director of Counseling, Head Athletic Trainer, Office of Student Life, the Academic Skills Center, the Administrator on Duty (AOD), and Campus Safety. Education/Certification/Licensure
Required: Must hold one of the following credentials: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Current and unrestricted license to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Authorized to prescribe medications in Massachusetts, including controlled substances. Active DEA registration. Preferred: Board certification in a relevant specialty (e.g., Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Primary Care) Experience
Required: Training in primary care, pediatrics, emergency medicine, or sports medicine A minimum of 5 years of experience in a clinical environment caring for children and adolescents Preferred: Experience prescribing and managing psychotropic medications. Experience managing nursing staff Experience working in an independent boarding / day school Competencies
Required: Proficiency in pediatric and/or adolescent health care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and emergency response. Proficiency in first aid, medication administration and other medical procedures. Knowledge and ability to coach others in the use of a medical records system and ensuring thorough documentation. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including students, families, faculty, and external medical providers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Competency in using health-related software, such as MAGNUS. Demonstrated computer expertise, including proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud. Understanding of confidentiality and related issues. Receptive to supervision and professional development. Desire to be a part of a dynamic educational community. Physical Abilities Required: Ability to work at a computer for up to 8 hours per day, in accordance with OSHA requirements. Ability to move throughout the Milton Academy campus without restriction, including navigating stairs, and respond quickly to emergencies in various locations. Ability to work extended or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, to support 24/7 health center coverage. Ability to perform clinical tasks requiring fine motor skills, such as administering injections or using medical instruments. Ability to work from various physical positions, including kneeling, bending, twisting, and standing for extended periods. Ability to accurately assess patients through visual observation and auditory evaluation (e.g., listening to heartbeats, lung sounds, or verbal communication).
