Space Center Houston is a space exploration learning destination dedicated to revealing how science and humanity power space exploration through meaningful, moving experiences about people and the courage, innovation, and teamwork they use to expand the boundaries of what's possible. We inspire guests of all ages to connect with the significance of space exploration as incredible feats of human spaceflight continue to bring joy and wonder to the world. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate.

We are seeking part time Data Collectors to directly interface with Space Center Houston visitors and audiences in support of Audience and Evaluation projects. Data Collectors must be friendly, outgoing, and reliably work independently with minimal supervision. Responsibilities and qualifications appear below:

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Approach, recruit, and inform Space Center Houston guests about Audience and Evaluation study requirements. Collect guest data at Space Center Houston or other locations via paper/pencil and tablet surveys, verbal interviews, and other participatory techniques (e.g., token voting, card sorts). Follow detailed protocols and achieve specified target quotas (vary by project). Obtain Human Subjects Research certification and abide by informed-consent ethical data collection practices. Observe guest behavior, enter data, manage giveaway incentive inventory, and other audience and evaluation tasks as assigned. Other duties as assigned. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to use random interception to approach and talk with Space Center Houston guests. Ability to work shifts during the week (Monday-Friday) at various times during the week. Not easily discouraged if/when guests decline to participate. Able to consistently follow a designated research protocol while collecting data from guests of all ages, including youth under 18. Able to stand for 3-4 hours at a time, indoors or outdoors. Ability to receive and provide prompt communication with supervisors via Space Center Houston Outlook email. Ability to share availability through Space Center Houston Outlook calendar. Desire to work a varied schedule (weekday/weekend, morning/afternoon/some evenings). Comfort using technology such as iPads or Tablets and the ability to troubleshoot independently when needed. Ability to represent Space Center Houston in a positive and professional manner while interacting with guests. Comfort using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel) for data entry. Interest in learning new techniques to collect data with visitors and openness to feedback. Interest in social sciences, research and evaluation, psychology or related field a plus. Bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency preferred. Proficiency in other languages (Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, French, Hindi) also an asset.

How scheduling works for this position:

Data Collection team members share their chosen availability on a monthly basis. Shift assignments are based on this availability and include a range of times during the weekdays; shifts are primarily needed in afternoons, but may require mornings or occasional evenings depending on projects. Preference is given to candidates with regular availability on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Data Collection shifts typically last 3 hours. Desired candidates will be available to complete at least one shift per week, depending on project need, and a typical week may range from 3-9 hours.
