Our client is seeking a Welding Engineer to be responsible for leading the development, qualification, and continuous enhancement of welding processes for manufacturing.
This role ensures strict compliance with AWS D1.1, ISO 9001, and specific customer standards. Serving as a vital link between engineering and operations, the Welding Engineer champions robust, efficient, and high-quality welding solutions across manufacturing lines.
Key Responsibilities
• Create, document, and update Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualification Records (WPQR) for SAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, and automated welding methods.
• Lead welding trials and optimize parameters using advanced equipment such as the Lincoln Power Wave AC/DC 1000; assess waveform and process data to refine arc stability, manage heat input, and maximize deposition efficiency.
• Troubleshoot welding concerns like porosity, incomplete fusion, and arc-strike inconsistencies utilizing structured root cause analysis methods (8D, 5-Why).
• Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering on the design of fixtures, manipulators, and robotic welding cells; contribute to new product introductions and support innovative mobile manufacturing setups.
• Work alongside Quality teams to resolve non-conformance reports (NCRs), validate repair processes, and ensure all inspection and testing procedures comply with AWS D1.1 and customer requirements.
• Oversee welder qualification, continuity records, performance tests, and provide ongoing training and technical support.
• Offer expertise during product design reviews, including guidance on joint design, weld symbols, and manufacturability aspects.
• Champion continuous improvement initiatives targeting throughput, cost reduction, and improved first-pass yield using Lean and Six Sigma techniques.
• Manage welding consumables specifications and assist Supply Chain in vendor qualification and ongoing supplier performance evaluations.
• Maintain awareness of emerging welding technologies, standards, and methods, recommending upgrades as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years' experience in heavy steel fabrication, ideally with SAW and large-diameter pipe or tower welding.
• Strong expertise in AWS D1.1 with direct experience preparing and qualifying welding procedures.
• Advanced knowledge of welding equipment and waveform control (e.g., Lincoln Power Wave) with the ability to interpret relevant data and logs.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and optimizing automated welding.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001 and APQP quality management frameworks.
• Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks or Inventor) and skilled at reading complex fabrication drawings.
Preferred Qualifications
• AWS CWI, CWE, or SCWI certification.
• Prior work with GE Vernova or other wind tower OEM specifications (e.g., Vestas).
• Experience with sophisticated inspection technologies (e.g., photogrammetry) or statistical process controls.
• Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified.
• Knowledge of ERP and PLM systems such as Omega, Intelex, or SAP.
