POSITION TITLE: Sample Processing Technician-Sorting, Scanning, & Opening Support
DEPARTMENT: Sample Processing
POSITION SUMMARY The Sample Processing Technician plays a vital role in ensuring accurate, timely processing of customer samples through our laboratory workflow. The primary focus of this role is to perform sorting and scanning operations, including barcode assignment and LIMS data entry. During lower volume periods or as needed, the technician will also support sample opening and preparation. This dual-role position requires high attention to detail, strong organization, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Partners with managers to resolve employee relations issues. Conducts effective, thorough and objective investigations, recommending and acting upon a course of action. Sort samples into trays by fluid type and testing category. Accurately scan barcodes and assign permanent lab numbers using LIMS. Identify and resolve barcode scanning issues, discrepancies, or errors. Prioritize rush and resolved samples for immediate processing. Prepare and print lab work orders, tray tags, and color indicators. Track hourly productivity using internal Excel tools. Perform sample reordering and appearance adjustments in LIMS as needed. Reset tray numbers daily and ensure systems are logged out properly at end of shift. Maintain clean and organized workstations. Open incoming packages and sort by testing type (Fuel, Coolant, Shell, etc.). Apply barcodes to both samples and corresponding paperwork. Identify rush samples and prioritize them accordingly. Handle non-standard samples (e.g., insufficient postage, defective items) per established procedures. Photograph, document, and report mislabeled or damaged items. Ensure all packages received before 3:00 PM are prepped and ready the same day. Support intra-laboratory sample processing and documentation when required. Follow all safety protocols including proper handling of Heptane and sharp tools.
SKILLS Mandatory Requirements Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise procedures. Basic computer skills and experience with data entry or barcode systems. Comfortable with physical tasks including sorting trays and lifting boxes. Ability to work in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment. Strong communication and teamwork skills.
EDUCATION Mandatory Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required.
EXPERIENCE Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in laboratory, sample processing, or
warehouse/logistics
environment. Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or similar platforms.
WORKING CONDITIONS Work performed at scanning stations, sorting tables, and mail/package areas. Involves moderate physical activity (standing, lifting, repetitive motion). Must wear appropriate PPE (gloves, safety glasses, ect..) when handling chemicals or hazardous materials.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS Reports to Supervisor, Sample Processing.
