DEFENSIVE CYBER OPERATIONS (DCO) SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT – MALWARE & EXPLOITATION FOCUS

Location: Fort Meade, MD | Type: Full-Time | Clearance: TS/SCI + CI Poly

Overview

DarkStar Intelligence is seeking a seasoned Defensive Cyber Operations (DCO) Subject Matter Expert to support a high-visibility seat with the Security Operations Center. This critical role replaces a prior DCO lead and requires a candidate with strong cyber exploitation knowledge and an ability to engage both technically and socially with mission stakeholders. This on-site position blends malware analysis, exploitation reconstruction, and operational support in a dynamic mission environment. U.S. citizenship is required.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as the senior DCO expert and technical lead at the SOC, offering mentorship and guidance to cyber operators

Perform malware behavior analysis and exploitation chain reconstruction using logs, forensics, and PCAPs

Conduct manual packet analysis and track attack vectors and exploit phases to understand adversary actions

Utilize Splunk and other data tools to support detection, triage, and forensic investigation (training available)

Provide operational input to defensive strategy and interface with mission partners on threat mitigation

Apply working knowledge of Ghidra or IDA Pro to analyze malware behavior (no in-depth RE required)

Support junior staff development and promote best practices in cyber threat detection and defense

Minimum Qualifications

Active TS/SCI security clearance with CI Polygraph

Bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, information systems, computer science, or related discipline

10+ years of experience in Defensive Cyber Operations, Cyber Threat Intelligence, or Exploitation Analysis

Deep familiarity with cyber exploitation concepts: memory/code injection, privilege escalation, credential abuse

Experience with malware analysis and exploitation lifecycle (e.g., delivery, execution, persistence)

Ability to conduct network-layer analysis and identify attack vectors from captured data (PCAPs)

Experience with SIEM tools (Splunk preferred) for alert triage, hunt, and behavioral analysis

Strong communication skills with the ability to brief leadership and collaborate across teams

Desired Qualifications

Experience supporting Defensive Cyber Operations or Hunt Forward missions

Familiarity with MITRE ATT&CK, cyber kill chain, and related adversary emulation frameworks

Previous experience in an on-site SOC or joint mission environment

Knowledge of Nessus or similar vulnerability assessment tools

Compensation & Benefits

Target Salary Range: $200,000 – $250,000 annually

The listed pay range is intended as a general guideline and does not represent a guaranteed salary. Final compensation will be determined based on several factors, including the role’s responsibilities, the candidate’s education, experience, and skill set, internal equity, market data, and applicable laws or agreements.
