Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, performs survey work of moderate difficulty. This position is responsible for contributing to a survey crew.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Obtains alignment, topographic and cross-sectional information and horizontal and vertical data necessary for engineering design and construction of roadway, utility and bridge projects.
Obtains measurement of length and direction of bounding lines for their correct determination and description and the establishment of land boundaries for conveyance and recording.
Under supervision assists in locating and identifying survey monuments, determining points of reference for survey monuments and taking measurements for same.
Draws sketches to identify monument reference points which include measurements and pertinent monument information.
Sets up and operates all survey instruments and equipment as needed (theodolite, level, SDR, plumb, tape, prism, level rod, Digital Level etc.).
Reads and interprets engineering plans and determines proper layout procedures for construction.
Performs preliminary and final cross-section surveys to determine quantity of earthwork materials moved or replaced.
Conducts boundary surveys to determine encroachments in the public right-of-way.
Takes accurate notes to determine and adjust benchmarks to an exacting tolerance.
Assists in preparing and maintaining inventory records and division records.
Assists in cataloging and maintaining engineering maps, survey records and notes.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Basic surveying principles, practices, and terminology.
Instruments and equipment used in survey work.
Current cadastral survey equipment, data recorders and office software for data processing.
Skill in:
Operation and setting up of survey instruments, tools, and hand-held data collection.
Reading and interpreting construction plans.
Performing heavy physical labor.
Ability to:
Work direction to subordinate personnel.
Safety lift and carry objects weighting up to approximately 110 pounds
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, vendor representatives and clients.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Tests equivalency and three (3) years of experience on a survey crew.
Must be able to safely lift and carry objects weighing up to approximately 110 pounds
Must possess a valid driver's license

The City of Toledo offers a voluntary governmental 457(b) deferred compensation plan, which is a retirement savings plan that allows eligible employees to supplement any existing retirement/pension benefits by saving and investing pre-tax dollars through salary deferral.
Contributions and any earnings are tax-deferred (both federal and state income taxes) until money is withdrawn. Withdrawals are taxed at ordinary income levels.
