Department: Management
Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time
Location: Bloomfield - New Jersey
Reporting To: Director Technology
Compensation: $105,000 - $125,000 / year
Description
Role Overview
Lummus Technology is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Electrical Engineer to support the design, development, and deployment of electrified heaters and furnaces, including both hybrid-electric and fully electric systems. This role will be part of a multidisciplinary team working on cutting-edge electrification technologies for industrial heating applications. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in medium- to low-voltage power systems and power electronics, with a strong ability to drive innovation and support the development of electrification products and services. This includes conceptual design development for interconnections ranging from KVA to MVA, detailed design reviews, coordination with design consultants, protection strategy development, procurement and bidding support for major equipment, and on-site commissioning support. The role also involves performing economic feasibility analyses-evaluating capital investment, emissions impact, and operational costs. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to conceive, develop, and commercialize technology and equipment solutions that enable the electrification of industrial processes using renewable power.
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
• Design and analyze electric-based heaters/furnaces using electrical heating elements (e.g., NiCr, FeCrAl, MoSi₂, SiC).
• Develop and compare various designs based on performance, cost, and technical requirements.
• Define electrical performance requirements and translate them into system-level specifications.
• Create conceptual electrical designs, power ratings, wiring layouts, and single-line diagrams.
• Conduct electrical studies: grounding, hazards, grid connection, and configuration analysis.
• Perform simulations for heater performance (real/reactive power, power factor, efficiency, etc.).
• Develop power balance, load sharing, grounding, and control strategies.
• Evaluate and select vendors for electrical equipment and services.
• Prepare technical requisitions and evaluate vendor proposals.
• Support interconnection studies, voltage drop calculations, and indicative pricing.
• Coordinate with consultants to develop detailed construction drawings.
• Review design deliverables and respond to Request for Information/Quote (RFI/Q) during construction.
• Draft specifications for MV and LV equipment.
• Analyze commissioning reports and system performance.
• Communicate technical concepts clearly across engineering and non-engineering teams.
• Stay current with emerging electrification technologies and market trends.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience in electrical heater/furnace design and analysis.
• Hands-on experience with electrical heating elements (NiCr, FeCrAl, MoSi₂, SiC).
• Proficiency in MV and LV heater design, including 1-line and 3-line diagrams, protection strategies, and short circuit studies.
• Simulation experience using MATLAB/Simulink (Simscape a plus).
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and ETAP for SLDs and electrical modeling.
• Experience with thyristor-based silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) including control schemes.
• Familiarity with related NEC, API, ANSI, and IEEE standards.
