Surgical Technician Position
This position is responsible for providing surgical patient care and related services in the OB operating room under the supervision of the RN circulator to ensure a safe and efficient surgical environment. In addition, while not functioning in the operating room, this position will be responsible for assisting nursing staff in direct and non-direct patient care functions at the direction of the professional nursing staff. Job Functions: Assesses surgical procedures and patient specific requirements with the circulating nurse to ensure proper preparation of the OB operating room. Prepares and maintains the sterile operating field for the duration of each surgical procedure. Assists the surgeon as needed during the inter-operative procedure. Assists with room turnover in the OB operating room suites between cases. Performs accurate instrument, sponge, needle, and blade count. Assists nursing staff in direct and non-direct patient care functions. Obtains and articulates pertinent data in an objective manner. Communicates pertinent patient information to the RN to assure continuum of care. Documents the various aspects of care according to RMC policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education/Work Experience: Graduate from an approved Surgical Technician program. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of sterile technique and handling of sterile equipment. Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions. Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above. Preparation and maintenance of a sterile field. Ability to work autonomously and as a team. Ability to work and multi-task in a high stress and fast paced environment. Strong communication and listening skills. Knowledge of basic computer functions. Capable of making independent decisions with the use of good critical thinking and problem solving skills. Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations. License/Certifications: Surgical Technician Certification (obtained within six months of hire) (grandfathered if hired prior to 4/2015). Current CPR certification or must be obtained as soon as possible after hire date. Preferred Qualifications: Previous surgical experience in a hospital setting.
