Funded by philanthropy and a private events business, our outdoor educational programs are offered at no cost to families. What is our mission and how do we achieve it? Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound's core mission is to build stronger, more equitable school communities by delivering free experiential learning programs that boost academic success and foster personal growth. Our research-based programs blend STEM, social-emotional learning, and challenge-based learning, giving students a unique opportunity to develop life skills alongside academic ones. Whom do we serve? We offer programs for Boston Public School middle and high school students, for-service programs for school and youth groups, and leadership development programs for professionals. We also fund our transformational programs by hosting private and corporate events and weddings. What is the opportunity? The Program Manager is responsible for managing school partnerships and delivering Connections programs with a focus on safety and quality of student outcomes. The role will also involve developing and updating high-quality science and social-emotional learning resources for our programming with Boston Public School students on the island and in the Boston community. Primary responsibilities include managing planning, delivery, and daily operations of assigned programs, including client relationships, staff oversight, program scheduling, content development, and reporting on program outcomes. This role involves informal management and coaching of up to 30 facilitators and course directors to deliver high-quality Outward Bound programming. The Program Manager is part of a larger team of managers and directors and reports to the Director of School Programs. The position manages course directors and instructional staff. What will you do? Program Management Oversee direct partnership management for a portfolio of Connections school partners. Build and cultivate relationships with educators, principals, and stakeholders within Boston Public Schools and the community. Collaborate with school administration, teachers, and staff to implement programs. Develop and communicate program operations and schedules. Ensure programs are delivered safely and with high quality, based on surveys, observations, and data. Collaborate on curriculum development and updates. Identify resources for outdoor education curriculum development. Support Course Directors with program needs during courses. Manage student enrollment paperwork. Analyze survey results and implement improvements. Coordinate with Family Engagement on student outreach and recruitment. Ensure compliance with Boston Public School policies for school-based programs. Personnel Management Lead, manage, and coach a team of course directors and instructors. Develop facilitators and leaders through Outward Bound experience. Model leadership that reflects Outward Bound values. Conduct observation and coaching sessions. Complete performance reviews and development plans. Oversee timecard management for staff. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience. Knowledge of urban school-based programs and/or Outward Bound. At least two years supervising employees. At least three years managing programs. Passion for social justice, environmental stewardship, and outdoor education. Commitment to culturally and linguistically sustaining practices. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Drive. Experience with CRM systems like Salesforce or booking systems like Triple Seat is a plus. Work Conditions Primarily work on the island, with some remote or school-based work. Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions. Assist with cargo loading/unloading, involving lifting parcels up to 50 lbs. Be on feet for 5+ hours daily. Comfortable on boats and around water. Maintain high performance in a dynamic environment, often exceeding regular hours.
