Executive Director of Corporate Venture Capital

will play a pivotal role in identifying, evaluating, investing, and managing therapeutic biotech and digital healthcare companies via equity investments for the Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund (BIVF) US. This position is responsible for creating strategic options for the future of Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) by expanding into novel therapeutic approaches and businesses, focusing on discovery-stage companies addressing high medical needs through groundbreaking therapeutic or digital healthcare platforms. The role will primarily focus on opportunities in the West/East Coast regions and will work closely with internal executives, the Head of Venture Fund, and external partners to execute investments and manage portfolio companies towards meaningful value inflection points. The position is based in Cambridge/Boston with 50% on-site presence required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Investment Strategy & Execution:

Collaborate with the Head of Venture Fund US and global Head of Venture Fund to develop and refine investment strategies, identify investment opportunities, build pipelines, and present cases to the Investment Committee. Define scientific focus, financing, and exit strategies for portfolio companies—often as lead investor. Lead negotiations with target companies and co-investors, including term sheet discussions, due diligence, and documentation for investment decisions.

Portfolio Management:

Manage a portfolio of investments by serving as a Board Director, guiding strategy, mentoring founders, and maximizing success. Ensure portfolio complementarity and successful exits, creating strategic options for BI. Provide regular updates on portfolio health and performance to stakeholders.

Sourcing & Networking:

Build and maintain a network within biotech, venture capital, academia, and entrepreneurship, focusing on West/East Coast opportunities. Scout and evaluate high-potential investment opportunities, especially in disease-modifying therapeutics and technologies. Represent BIVF at investor conferences and foster relationships with co-investors, academic institutions, and tech transfer offices.

Compliance & Governance:

Adhere to governance standards, regulations, and ethical guidelines in all activities. Maintain high ethical standards to uphold BIVF’s reputation within the biotech and pharmaceutical communities. Perform all business in compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., FDA, OSHA, PhRMA) and company policies, reporting violations immediately.

Requirements Doctoral degree (PhD, MD) in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Medicine, or related fields; business or finance background is a plus. Strong scientific background with expertise in drug discovery, therapeutic development, and R&D. Experience in business development or venture capital is a plus. At least 5 years of therapeutics R&D experience, with a track record of leading projects from discovery to clinical entry. Experience with startup companies, venture capital, and partnerships. Managerial experience, including recruiting and mentoring. Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills. Well-established network on the West/East Coast in biotech and academia. Financial modeling and analytical skills. Proficiency in MS Office and databases. Willingness to travel extensively, often on short notice.
