Institute for Health Equity Research, Evaluation and Policy, Inc (the Institute)
was recently founded by the Massachusetts League (Mass League) of Community Health Centers (League) to achieve health equity state-wide using emancipatory principles to support community health center research and practice. The goal is to foster research that elucidates the causes of health inequities, evaluates what works to address them, uses the work to inform public policies and clinical practice, all while creating career advancement opportunities for community health center staff.
The Mass League was founded in 1972 as one of the country's first state Primary Care Associations (PCAs). Established under the same federal authorizing legislation as the health center program (Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act), PCAs are organized around a set of core functions and competencies that provide a framework for support and assistance to health centers and the communities they serve. The League is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization registered as a public charity with the Commonwealth's Secretary of State. It maintains professional staff at its headquarters in Boston and its training center in Worcester
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Health Data Analyst to support data analysis and reporting for health-related research and evaluation initiatives. The ideal candidate will have strong programming and analytical skills, a solid understanding of data structures common in healthcare, and a passion for evidence-based science and evaluation.
Essential Functions
(The following is a list of essential functions, which may be subject to change at any time and without advance notice. Management may assign new duties, reassign existing duties, or eliminate a role. Responsibilities include but may not be limited to the following.)
Clean, process, and analyze large-scale datasets, including EMR/EHR data. Develop reproducible reports, dashboards and data visualizations to support operational and research goals. Collaborate with stakeholders across clinical, operational, and research teams to define analytic needs. Communicate analytic findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Assist in developing and documenting analytic protocols, data dictionaries, and data quality checks. Build and maintain codebases and databases.
Competencies/Skills
The successful applicant will have the following skills and qualifications:
Strong proficiency in R or Python for data analysis and visualization. Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation. Familiarity with Tableau or other BI/visualization tools preferred. Prior experience with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) data is highly desirable. Prior experience with claims data is a plus. Understanding of basic epidemiologic principles, health equity or social epidemiology is highly desirable. Interest in Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence/LLMs a plus. Interest in geospatial epidemiology and geo-mapping a plus.
Preferred Attributes
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and quality. Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams. Interest in healthcare delivery, population health, or health equity. Ability to work on multiple projects.
Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree preferred (MPH, MS in Statistics, Biostatistics, or related field). At least 3-5 years of experience working with large datasets, preferably in healthcare or public health.
Requirements
Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse coworkers, business partners, clients, etc., are required. Must have reliable transportation to get to other sites and meetings as needed. The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to regularly participate in meetings, conferences, and other work functions. The employee must be able to remain in a stationary position 80% of the time. The employee needs to move inside and outside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment and meet with community partners at different sites. The position requires occasionally lifting office products and supplies up to 50 pounds and traveling to various locations for meetings.
