Histotechnician
The Division of Laboratory and Animal Resources (DLAR) is seeking a part-time Histotechnician to prepare specimens for microscopic examination and analysis. The individual will process, embed, cut, stain and coverslip diagnostic and research tissues. Standard H&E as well as select special histochemical staining is required. Familiarity and routine upkeep of histology equipment (microtomes, tissue processors, stainers, embedding centers, etc.) is required, as is maintenance of supply inventory and ordering of reagents and materials necessary for laboratory operations. Direct dialogue with DLAR veterinary pathologist will occur regularly. Grossing of fixed animal tissues for large projects may be requested. Ancillary tasks will include coordinating daily workflow of tasks, filing of requisitions, arranging necessary equipment service work, archiving of paraffin blocks and slides and cleaning. The successful candidate must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate, legible records and other forms of documentation. The individual must consistently demonstrate positive and professional verbal, written, interpersonal and customer service skills as well as effective time and process management. Candidate must be available to work weekends and holidays and pass the mandatory criminal background check. The position requires successful enrollment in the University of Pittsburgh Animal Exposure Surveillance Program and other medical surveillance/immunization programs as dictated by the current research activities and when applicable. Vaccinations and/or TB testing may be required. Histotechnician Certification or Eligibility is required. Overall related experience level required: All candidates: 2 years of histotechnician experience working in a clinical or research histology laboratory Ability to operate and perform routine histology processing Ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) Basic computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g., email, Word, Excel) and University systems Working knowledge of biological cellular systems as well as understanding of chemicals and chemical interactions as associated with histotechnical endeavors. Eligibility for Histology Technician certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology is required.
