Youth Program Intern
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is one of the world's largest international humanitarian non-governmental organizations (INGO), at work in more than 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. A force for humanity, IRC employees deliver lasting impact by restoring safety, dignity and hope to millions. If you're a solutions-driven, passionate change-maker, come join us in positively impacting the lives of millions of people world-wide for a better future. Interact daily with students and families, building positive relationships and encouraging academic success. Support the youth program staff with youth client case management, casefiles, and reporting. Conduct home visits and phone calls to enroll newly referred families in the youth program. Assist in implementing weekly after-school tutoring to support academic growth in a variety of subjects. Support with student enrollment in their local schools and navigating the U.S. school system. Assist students with applications for college, GED courses, scholarships, financial aid, and other opportunities. Solicit local companies and organizations for donations of services and/or goods. Provide feedback to the youth team on ease and effectiveness of existing curriculum, and work with the youth team to revise and/or expand curriculum as needed. Interns will learn about the US refugee resettlement system and services and benefits available in the State of Maryland and across the US. Interns will gain curriculum development experience and skills including defining learning objectives, identifying and developing effective classroom teaching methods for multicultural/multilingual students. Interns will learn how to coordinate engaging, skill-building leadership activities for high school or middle school students using trauma-informed and culturally/linguistically responsive practices. Intern will gain insight on various refugee and immigrant issues and support the systems that enable them to thrive. Interns will learn about the challenges and barriers humanitarian immigrant students often encounter while integrating into U.S. schools. Intern will focus on identifying and working to capitalize on the unique strengths and benefits that these students bring to our communities. Intern will be able to provide basic program management support including but not limited to outreach and recruitment, intake, data entry, lesson planning and group program facilitation.
