Principal / District Nurse

Job Goal:

To support, promote, and implement a comprehensive program of health services for the assigned location(s) Minimum Qualifications:

Possesses a current license (RN) to practice nursing in the State of Alabama

Three (3) years nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, community health, or acute care

Prior experience working in a school health setting preferred

Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills

Ability to work effectively in a team environment

Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills

Ability to proficiently use current technology

Current certification in CPR/AED instruction or willingness to obtain

Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law and the Board may require Duties and Responsibilities: Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities Practices within the defined limits of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, and the Standards of School Nursing Practice of the National Association of School Nurses Complies with the Alabama Department of Health regulations, District policy, and the ALSDE guidelines Performs screening procedures as required by the Alabama Department of Health, Alabama Education Agency, and District policy and reports finding as directed Serves as health advocate for the student Provides temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or employees according to District policy and ALSDE guidelines Follows notification protocol in cases of accident or illness Serves as a health liaison between school, physician, parent/guardian, and community Assesses student problems, implements the nursing process, and makes appropriate referrals, working with students, teachers, parents, family physicians, and other community health providers as needed Coordinates a system of administration and management of medications administered at school Administers medication according to District policy and procedures Reviews, evaluates, and maintains immunizations records Maintains complete and accurate health records on each student Submits timely reports as requested by the District Nurse Provides nursing care for students requiring special health procedures (i.e. catheterization, tube feedings, etc.) Maintains adequate supplies in the health office Reports potential school health/safety hazards as directed Participates in IEP development, child abuse investigations, and other school committees as requested Promotes wellness and provides information to facilitate healthy life styles among students and employees Provides health counseling and teaching on an individual basis Contributes to the health education program as a resource person in both planning and teaching capacities, working with the principal and teachers Maintains ongoing communication with the Principal and District Nurse regarding health problems and related matters Maintains certification in CPR/AED instructor Participates in staff development meetings and professional growth activities Completes mandated continuing nursing education requirements to maintain RN license; keeps well informed of the latest trends in health and education Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s) This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position.
