Survey Crew Chief
NV5 is seeking a full-time Survey Crew Chief for our Cary, NC office. As our new Survey Crew Chief, you will train and instruct field crews on proper use and care of equipment, ensure the successful and accurate completion of the field portion of the project, while upholding a high level of integrity. Leadership and Team Management: Lead and supervise a survey team in the field, ensuring efficient and accurate data collection. Assign tasks to team members, provide guidance, and oversee their work. Determine most efficient plan of action for data acquisition, beginning with the primary control through any other potential Survey tasks, such as topographic surveys, boundary surveys, right of way staking, construction layout, etc. Field Operations: Operate and maintain surveying equipment, including total stations, digital levels, GPS receivers, and data collectors. Research and review land records, legal documents, and historical survey data to determine property boundaries. Establish boundary markers and reference points using high accuracy surveying techniques. Conduct traverses and level loops using high accuracy techniques and equipment to establish primary and secondary control. Maintain accurate notes, records, and sketches to describe and certify work performance. Communicate daily with Project Surveyors and CAD technicians regarding project schedule and work progress. Ensure that the surveying team follows safety protocols and practices in the field. Maintain a high level of safety in the field. This includes safe driving habits, safe and proper use of equipment, site safety as required, and the use of proper Personal Protection Equipment. Maintain NV5 company truck and equipment. Data Processing and Equipment Maintenance: Transfer collected field data to computer systems for further analysis and reporting. Maintain and calibrate surveying equipment to ensure accurate measurements. Troubleshoot and perform minor equipment repairs as needed. Client and Stakeholder Communication: Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to understand project requirements and objectives. Provide regular progress updates and communicate any issues encountered in the field. Maintain detailed and accurate records of survey activities, measurements, and data. Prepare and preserve field notes and documentation. Quality Control: Ensure that survey data meets project specifications and quality standards. Perform quality control checks on collected data and survey documentation. Professional Development: Stay current with advancements in surveying technology and best practices. Pursue continuing education and training to maintain surveying certifications and licenses. Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED An associates degree or bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, or a related field is a plus, or relevant work experience. 5+ years of land surveying experience Minimum of 2 years party chief experience. Proficiency in operating and maintaining surveying equipment and software. Strong knowledge of surveying techniques, including boundary determination and topographic mapping. Good communication and interpersonal skills for working with team members and clients. Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in the field. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records. Competent in operating total stations and data collectors Experience with Trimble GPS equipment is a plus Experience with Leica instruments and data collection is a plus Ability to travel Valid NC Driver's License in good standing. Work Environment and Physical Demands of This Position: The characteristics described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position. This position will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments. Work will primarily be in the field involving long term standing and frequent walking as well as include common hazards at construction and project sites. Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Must be able to walk over rough and uneven terrain and be able to stand up to 10-12 hours a day on occasion. Must have the ability to see, smell, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel and twist, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, sit, stand, and walk. Weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required. Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
