Development Engineer - Electric Engine
Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers while producing minimal noise. As a Development Engineer on our Electric Engine team, you'll support the development and testing of Archer's innovative electric aviation technology. This role offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge electric propulsion systems while working alongside senior engineers to solve complex technical challenges and ensure our products meet the highest standards of safety and performance. Support Electric Engine Analysis & Testing
Lead electric engine teardowns and component inspections Support root cause investigations by collecting and organizing data from test results Help document findings and contribute to technical reports Learn to identify and escalate critical issues that impact product safety and performance Thermal Systems Testing Support
Assist in thermal testing of electric motors, inverters, and battery systems Support data collection during thermal teardown analysis and component investigations Help identify thermal issues through hands-on testing and measurement Document thermal test procedures and results accurately Engineering Process Development
Support field failure analysis activities and help implement corrective actions Assist in developing Electric Engine DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) documentation Help validate Electric Engine requirements during development phases Support powertrain system studies and performance optimization efforts Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Electric Engine design, Motor, Rotor, and Geartrain teams Participate in design reviews and technical discussions Support senior engineers in providing technical guidance to project teams Contribute to team problem-solving sessions and brainstorming activities What You Need:
Education & Experience
Master's / PhD Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field 2-5 years of relevant engineering experience (internships and co-ops count) Interest in electric propulsion systems, motors, or powertrain technologies Strong academic foundation in engineering fundamentals Technical Skills
Basic understanding of mechanical, thermal, and electrical engineering principles Familiarity with problem-solving methodologies and root cause analysis concepts Basic proficiency in data analysis tools (Excel required, MATLAB/Python preferred) Hands-on experience with testing equipment and measurement tools Professional Skills
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work effectively in team environments Eagerness to learn and take on new technical challenges Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks Additional Requirements
Willingness to travel domestically as needed (up to 15%) Commitment to safety protocols and quality engineering practices Bonus Qualifications:
Internship or project experience in aerospace, automotive, or electric vehicle industries Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.) Hands-on experience building test setups or working in laboratory environments Coursework or projects involving electric motors, power electronics, or thermal systems Experience with data analysis and visualization tools At Archer, we reward exceptional performance that supports our business strategy. For this junior position, we are targeting a base salary range of $110,400.00 - $138,000.00, with final compensation determined by your unique combination of education, skills, and experience.
