The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics LLC (CAO) is one of the nation's largest Orthopaedics practices, owned and operated by physicians, with over 60 locations across Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The Medical Assistant assists providers with efficient patient flow while maintaining high standards of care and performs a variety of general patient care activities. The Medical Assistant helps to ensure a positive patient experience while performing the analytical, technical and customer service skills necessary to support the care of the patient. We are currently seeking a pre-med student for a full-time position during their gap year. This opportunity will begin in the summer of 2026, and we are now starting the interview process. The selected candidate must be available to work full-time for a minimum commitment of one year. This position is specifically for students planning to apply to medical school and taking a gap year before matriculation. Throughout the year, you will gain valuable clinical experience and exposure to the medical field. You will be expected to apply medical knowledge at the level appropriate for a medical assistant
not to make clinical decisions or function as a physician. Letters of recommendation for medical school applications will be provided only to those who demonstrate a strong work ethic, consistent performance, genuine interest in the field, and a clear effort to understand and appropriately apply medical knowledge. This enables the doctors to make a thoughtful and informed assessment of each student's potential to succeed in medical school and ultimately as a physician. Primary responsibilities include: Representing CAO and the Practice in a professional and patient-focused manner. Showing patients to examination rooms and preparing them for the physician. Recording patients' medical history, medications, allergies, vital statistics, and information such as test results. Ensuring proper consent forms are obtained prior to preparing a patient for treatment. Preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician. Explaining treatment procedures, medications, diets, wound care instructions, and physicians' instructions to patients. Helping physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials. Authorizing drug refills and providing prescription information to pharmacies. Preparing treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean. Keeping exam room supplies stocked, auditing and discarding expired medications, maintaining instruments, and preparing sterilization as required. Maintaining all logs and required checks. Keeping equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance. Adhering to all CAO and Practice professional standards, policies, and procedures. Securing patient information and maintaining patient confidence. Maintaining an effective and collaborative working relationship with patients, medical staff, coworkers, and the public. Assisting providers with office procedures. Taking telephone messages and providing feedback and answers to patient/physician/surgery center/pharmacy calls. Performing other duties as assigned. Required education and experience include: High school diploma or equivalent. Medical Assistant Certification preferred. CPR for Healthcare Providers certification preferred. Experience and proficiency working with computers and electronic medical records. One year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a busy physician's office, or equivalent combination of certification and experience, preferred. Working knowledge of medical terminology and coding. Required competencies/skills and abilities include: Strong interpersonal skills, including superior customer service skills and a high level of professionalism. Strong oral and written communication skills with excellent self-discipline and patience. Proficient in Windows based office technologies (e.g., Word, Excel). Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in the English language. Physical demands include: Ability to sit for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to use appropriate body mechanics when making necessary transfers and helping patients with exercises. Frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting. Some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a standard work shift. Adequate hearing to perform duties in person and over telephone. Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, medical equipment, fax machine, scanner, photocopier, and telephone. Ability to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone. Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading materials from printed sources and computer screens. Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
