The City of Norfolk's Downtown branch at Slover invites applications for a part-time Library Assistant II position to join our Circulation Team. Success in this position draws on the incumbent’s competencies in advocating an inclusive and diverse library environment, nurturing safe and accessible library spaces, and embracing innovative processes and technologies that enhance library operations. This position reports to the Customer Service Team Lead at The Downtown Branch at Slover.

Primary responsibilities of this position include ensuring that The Downtown Branch at Slover Library materials are organized and easy to obtain by both the public and the staff, charging and discharging of library materials, and running various library collection reports. Assists with the daily operations of the library. Performs administrative duties including typing, filing, ordering supplies, and assisting with events. Provides customer service to patrons by providing information, promoting general usage of facilities, and operating all library equipment.

The Slover will support a thriving downtown by encouraging tourism, providing resources for entrepreneurs, and housing the downtown branch library at The Slover.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

    Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans and collecting fees.

    Provides customer service by providing assistance with computers and equipment, searching database for information and resources and recommending reading material.

    Performs administrative duties by preparing statistical reports, ordering supplies, opening mail, distributing library materials, replacing damaged materials, and preparing lost book forms.

    Assists with events by setting up displays and researching and preparing information about authors.

    Assists with the receiving and ordering of new library materials using the on-line computer program by entering and checking the received orders and assisting with the creation of selection lists and purchase orders.

Education/Experience

n

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

One year of experience in library or related customer service work..

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Hours: This position is 20 hours per week. Workdays and hours will vary depending on organizational needs. Staff typically work schedules anytime within the hours of 9:30 am - 6:00 pm on Monday, 8:30 am - 7:00 pm Tuesday – Thursday, and 8:30 am -5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.This position will require flexibility to work some rotating weekends and evening schedules.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
