We are looking for a passionate, customer-focused Lead Applied Scientist with exceptional analytical skills to become a key player in our team. This role is integral to optimizing Amazon's extensive delivery network, significantly influencing the customer experience, especially during the final stage of delivery.

In this role, you will:

  • Address business challenges by creating compelling data-driven cases to influence organizational change.
  • Develop input and assumptions based on existing models to estimate costs and identify savings opportunities concerning network growth and operations.
  • Create metrics to measure performance, identify trends, and recommend actionable plans.
  • Manage multiple impactful projects concurrently.
  • Collaborate with technology teams and product managers to create tools and systems that support business growth.
  • Communicate effectively with both internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Implement scheduling solutions, enhance metrics, and develop scalable processes and tools.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Operations Research, Statistics, Engineering, or Supply Chain Management.
  • Extensive experience in operations research and data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Robust program management and research science expertise.
  • The capability to make independent decisions in ambiguous environments while working collaboratively with a team.
  • A customer-obsessed mindset focused on enhancing the Amazon delivery experience.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Advanced Modeling and Algorithm Development: Design and implement sophisticated machine learning models for logistics optimization and create complex time-series forecasting algorithms.
  • AI and Machine Learning Integration: Architect and deploy AI-powered systems to enhance decision-making and develop reinforcement learning algorithms.
  • Big Data Analytics and Processing: Implement distributed computing solutions for massive data processing and leverage cloud computing platforms for scalability.
  • AI-Driven Workflow Optimization: Design AI agents for autonomous decision-making and create models for customer behavior analysis.
  • Software Development and System Architecture: Write efficient code in languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and maintain complex systems to optimize logistics.

We are Amazon's Last Mile Science and Analytics team, dedicated to revolutionizing e-commerce delivery. Our mission is to optimize the logistics network, forecast demand with machine learning, and enhance route efficiency. We innovate delivery methods, apply AI to solve complex problems, and perform geospatial analysis, all while continuously improving speed, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience building machine learning models or algorithms for business applications.
  • PhD in computer science, machine learning, operations research or a related quantitative field, or a Master’s degree with relevant industry experience.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java, or Perl.
  • Experience in neural deep learning and machine learning techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PhD with 15+ years of relevant research experience post-PhD.
  • Deep expertise in Machine Learning.
  • Strong mathematical and statistical core competencies.
  • A proven track record of successful algorithm design projects.
  • Publications in top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
  • Experience with mentorship or management of senior scientists and engineers.
  • Effective communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale distributed systems and the ability to build scalable models.
