We are hiring for a Software Engineer to join the Britannica engineering team working across complex systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and writing clean, testable code. You'll be instrumental in shaping the backend infrastructure and ensuring reliability and performance across all services. Location: Chicagoland/Hybrid (Out-of-State candidates can be fully remote) Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java, Python, and PHP Architect and implement microservices that are performant, scalable, and secure Integrate and optimize relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and in-memory data stores (Redis) Write and maintain unit tests to ensure code reliability and quality Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and troubleshooting session Collaborate with frontend developers, DevOps, and product teams to deliver high-quality software Contribute to documentation and internal knowledge sharing Required Skills & Experience 3+ years of backend development experience in a production environment Proficiency in Java, Python and/or PHP Hands-on experience with Redis, MySQL, and PostgreSQL Solid understanding of RESTful APIs and backend integration patterns Experience developing and maintaining microservices in a distributed architecture Familiarity with unit testing frameworks and TDD principles Comfort with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment Experience in an Agile work environment, contributing to sprints and story point estimations. Nice to Haves Experience with Docker or other containerization technologies IaC experience using Serverless or SST Work experience creating admin UI's for content management systems Familiarity with GraphQL or message queues Knowledge of performance tuning for large-scale applications Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, etc.) Britannica strives to provide its users with trustworthy, verified information in a constantly changing world.
