Position Highlights:

At least four weekend shifts per 6-week schedule

Summary

The Lactation Consultant provides clinical assessment, care, education, and support to breastfeeding mothers in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role collaborates closely with nursing and medical staff to ensure optimal care for both the breastfeeding mother and infant.

Responsibilities

Breastfeeding Assessment & Support

Evaluate breastfeeding effectiveness and provide appropriate interventions and education to prevent or address feeding challenges.

Support for Non-Breastfeeding Infants

Assist mothers of infants unable to breastfeed in establishing and maintaining milk supply, including proper storage and handling of expressed milk.

Collaborative Care

Work with primary care providers and healthcare teams to implement feeding interventions tailored to the medical needs of the infant and/or mother.

Education & Training

Deliver breastfeeding education to patients, hospital staff, and community partners. Participate in ongoing training and outreach efforts.

Post-Discharge Support

Offer continued breastfeeding support after discharge through phone consultations, in-person follow-ups, and coordination with outpatient care providers.

Qualifications

Education

Associate's degree required

Licensure/Certification

Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire

Experience

Minimum of six (6) months of experience in breastfeeding and lactation support

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong clinical assessment skills

Excellent communication and teaching abilities

Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines

Commitment to culturally sensitive, inclusive care
