The National Security Sector at Leidos is looking for a Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED) to join our rapidly growing Overload/Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel (O/MUSV) Program. The program, based in Port Hueneme, CA, focuses on delivering state-of-the-art autonomous vessel technology to the US Navy. We operate and maintain prototype autonomous vessels for testing and evaluation and develop essential operations, maintenance, logistics, and training procedures for the future autonomous fleet.
As a QMED, you will engage in exciting technological advancements aboard unmanned surface vessels (USVs). You will be a key member of a seven-person crew, working on-site during testing and evaluation. This role includes extensive travel and hands-on work aboard USVs, both at sea and in port, where you will be responsible for operating and maintaining the vessels.
Key Responsibilities
Report to the USV Chief Engineer and Deputy Port Captain regarding USV operations, both pier-side and underway.
Oversee first-line maintenance and repairs of the USV propulsion system, handling scheduled and corrective maintenance, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and automated control systems.
Participate in essential seamanship duties, acting as line handler, watch stander, and ship's crew as required.
Stand 12-hour engineering watches daily.
Assist with the overall preparation, preservation, and cleanliness of the O/MUSV ship and associated equipment.
Support pre/post-mission craft readiness functions.
Contribute to vessel security and visitor control when necessary.
Engage in Leidos and Government safety programs.
Collaborate closely with active-duty military and other Government personnel.
Basic Qualifications
Capability to perform duties in a challenging work environment.
Possession of USCG Merchant Mariner credentials as QMED.
STCW RFPEW certification.
A high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
Prior experience with basic seamanship duties.
Familiarity with small boat operations, maintenance, and line handling.
Capacity to lift 40 lbs.
Ability to work closely with others in a small working environment over extended deployment periods.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous US military service, ideally in the Coast Guard or Navy on a Surface platform.
Strong communication skills.
