Patients may present with respiratory failure, sepsis, closed head injuries, multi-system organ dysfunction, and complex traumas. Nurses must be competent in the care of medical and surgical populations. A strong understanding of advanced hemodynamics, including pressor usage per titration protocols, is essential. Experience with antihypertensive drips, sedative and Narcan drips, thrombo-embolytics, and various monitoring techniques is required. Utilization of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), BiPap/Cpap, and oxygen-dependent therapies may be needed. Nurses with extensive adult Progressive Care Unit experience and community hospital ICU experience tend to excel in this role. The average patient load consists of three high-acuity patients. Competency tests will be required within a specified timeframe after submission.
