The unit has 20 beds and a staff of 40. During the day shift, there is 1 charge nurse and 5 nurses, along with 3 techs. Night shift consists of 1 charge nurse and 5 nurses, with 2 techs. Patient ratios are estimated at 1:4, with charge nurses free of patients. Typical equipment includes vents, feeding pumps, IV pumps, wound vacs, specialty beds, suction devices, and chest tubes. Electronic medical records are managed using Meditech. Candidates must have BLS certification and the ability to manage chest tubes and trauma patients. Preferred candidates will have ACLS certification. Typical procedures performed in the unit include placing chest tubes and bedside bronchoscopies. This is a standard trauma unit with stable vented and trached patients. The unit fosters teamwork and includes highly acute patient populations, presenting a challenge for staff. Teamwork is emphasized, and there is strong support from charge nurses and tech staff. Physicians are responsive and provide excellent care.
