The Executive Director of Stuart’s Opera House provides strategic leadership and overall management, and oversees all aspects of the organization’s operations, including artistic programming, financial management, fundraising, and community engagement. This role requires a dynamic leader with a deep understanding of the performing arts industry, strong fundraising and communication skills, and the ability to establish and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders. The Executive Director oversees a talented, passionate team of nine full-time and five part-time staff. Stuart’s Opera House is a $2.3 million organization that presents over 75 shows annually in the historic theater, has a dynamic and nationally acclaimed arts education program reaching thousands of youth, is a sought-out rental venue for private, community, and corporate events, and produces the annual Nelsonville Music Festival and other productions and presentations at the newly developed Snow Fork Event Center throughout the year.

Roles and Responsibilities Serves as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for the organization, building relationships with community leaders, donors, media, and audiences. Champions the vision, values, and priorities of the organization to staff, stakeholders, and the broader community. Works with the Board of Directors to develop an annual budget for Board approval, ensuring alignment with the mission and goals. Reports regularly to the Board with accurate information for effective institutional governance and implements board-approved processes, policies, and strategies. Leads the implementation of the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) grant related to the infrastructure improvements at Snow Fork Event Center. Oversees daily operations, supervises and mentors staff, and establishes policies. Sets direction with the Development Director in fundraising efforts, including cultivating donor relationships, grant writing, reporting, and achieving set goals. Drives revenue generation through diverse streams, including fundraising, sponsorships, ticket sales, grants, and event rentals. Tracks the organization’s progress toward its goals, evaluates its performance, and makes adjustments as needed. Oversees a dynamic outreach and marketing program that lifts the Opera House’s profile. Works with the Board, leading the organization’s strategic planning efforts and implementation, including growth associated with Snow Fork Event Center. This is a direct-hire, full-time salaried leadership role. While most of the work hours are weekdays, during standard business hours, certain events and productions will require time and attention during the evening and weekend hours. The salary is competitive, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health (portion paid by organization), dental, vision, and life insurance. Qualifications: REQUIRED EXPERIENCE : The ideal candidate will be a passionate nonprofit leader with strong management experience and a deep commitment to equity, community-based programming, and transformative impact. Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in business, public administration, non-profit management, or related field, including the arts. A minimum of 5 years of executive management experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization, with significant experience in the arts or a related area. Proficiency with financial and nonprofit business management; ability to oversee the annual budget, interpret financial statements, and articulate performance to the Board and stakeholders. Possess exceptional communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills to network and connect with audiences and to represent the organization at the highest levels. Success in fundraising; experience working with donors, foundations, and corporate and governmental funding sources. Strategic-planning acumen; ability to see the big picture and communicate a vision, facilitating consensus on organizational change. DESIRED EXPERIENCE: Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software. Track record of managing and motivating a strong, unified team through visionary, collaborative, and forward-thinking leadership style is highly valued. A demonstrable connection and passion for the power of the arts to change lives, amplify unheard voices, and bolster communities and schools.
