Principal AI Research Scientist

This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI-infused software products while collaborating with experts across R&D, engineering, and academia. You’ll take the lead in cutting-edge research, proposal development, and AI strategy while working in a flexible, hybrid or remote setup. This position blends technical leadership with hands-on algorithm development, and you'll directly influence the growth of impactful, scalable AI products in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. Accountabilities: Lead exploratory AI/ML research to identify novel product opportunities. Author and present proposals to government and commercial R&D partners. Serve as the AI/ML subject matter expert across multidisciplinary teams. Develop and evaluate algorithms for reasoning over multi-modal and structured data. Guide product direction with cutting-edge insight, balancing innovation with business goals. Collaborate with external researchers and academic institutions to advance AI capabilities. Represent AI advancements internally and externally, including at industry conferences. Mentor junior engineers and data scientists, contributing to a high-performing team culture. Maintain regular customer engagement to incorporate feedback into evolving product strategies. PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related technical field. 5+ years of ML experience (including academic/research work). Expertise in Python, Jupyter Notebooks, and ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch). Strong grasp of algorithms and techniques like SVM, neural networks, clustering, etc. Demonstrated experience in proposal writing and business development strategy. Familiarity with RAG methods, cloud platforms (AWS), knowledge graphs, and graph databases. Entrepreneurial mindset and passion for innovation in AI. Strong leadership and mentorship skills with the ability to guide R&D teams. Clearance eligibility required (US Citizenship mandatory); travel up to 20%. Preferred: Experience with RDF, Nvidia Triton, Go, or data engineering workflows. Base salary: $200,000+ annually. Flexible remote or hybrid work arrangement (offices in Utica and Rome, NY).
