Deputy US Foreign Policy Editor (Washington, DC) Assisting on managing Reuters news agency’s coverage of the biggest U.S. foreign policy stories, including the Gaza conflict, U.S.-China relations and the ongoing war in Ukraine along with long-standing issues ranging from North Korea to Iran. The deputy editor will also work with reporters to develop sources and break news.

About the Role

In this opportunity as Deputy US Foreign Policy Editor (Washington, DC), you will: Manage a small team of reporters and help them cultivate better sources, mentor them on how to land impactful scoops on the top U.S. foreign policy topics as well as help them develop ideas for initiative stories.

Liaise and work with the U.S. Foreign Policy Editor to determine coverage direction and priorities and how to deploy the team to ensure best results.

Take ownership for the story planning of certain themes, such as the Gaza conflict and work with the reporters to plan coverage of upcoming events and deliver initiative stories.

Organize and run story planning calls both for the coverage of spot stories and upcoming events.

Discuss with reporters the direction of a planned story, edit and tweak reporters’ stories.

Assume reporter duties by delivering scoops on major developments, attending briefings and going on State Department trips.

Deepen and expand existing source base, focus on delivering impactful enterprise stories that will distinguish Reuters from its competitors.

Work with Reuters bureaus, colleagues and editors across the globe to ensure seamless cooperation, bring together reporters in calls to organize coverage plans.

(Will supervise 3 Reporters, such as State Department Reporter and Foreign Policy Reporter.) (May telecommute from commuting distance to Washington, DC per company hybrid work policy.)

About You

You're a fit for the role of Deputy US Foreign Policy Editor (Washington, DC) if your background includes: Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Journalism, International Relations, Political Science or a degree in similar field, followed by 5 years of Journalistic experience covering political stories and government policy.

5 years of experience with strong news judgment in a fast-paced, wire journalism environment.

5 years of experience covering international affairs and diplomacy.

5 years of versatility experience in covering multiple breaking new stories on a given day.

5 years of experience working seamlessly with different Reuters bureaus across the globe.

5 years of experience delivering scoops and investigative stories, working with senior editors.

5 years of experience working in hostile environments including riots, military conflicts, suicide attacks.

3 years of experience deputizing for the bureau chief and leading a team of journalists.

2 years of experience coaching and mentoring more junior reporters.

30% travel time required with US secretaries of state for the news coverage of their overseas trips.

The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $162,843 - $272,610.Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity.
