Veterinary Science Teacher (Summer)

EXPLO Middle School at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA

www.explo.org

Dates (in person):

July 12, 2025 - July 25, 2025 (teaching weekdays only)

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual experienced in the field of veterinary science, to engage curious students in our hands-on, project-based Veterinary Science focus program.

About The Program

EXPLO Middle School is a 4-week summer program for students who are currently in grades 6-8. It includes two 2-week sessions taking place at Wellesley College’s campus in Wellesley, MA. Students will either participate in EXPLO 360°, in which they will take a variety of classes over their two weeks, or in one of our Focus programs — Veterinary Science or Medical Rotations. We are looking for someone to instruct the second session of veterinary science.

The Opportunity

As the instructor for our Veterinary Science focus program, you will engage with a dynamic, project-based curriculum crafted by EXPLO’s professional curriculum development team, yet retain the flexibility to infuse your teaching with your unique expertise, interests, and passions. In this role, you will guide bright and curious students through an experience that emphasizes collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world problem solving, supported by EXPLO’s Office of Teaching and Learning. You will have the opportunity to facilitate connections with guest speakers and others who are shaping the future of veterinary science, and inspire students to explore both new areas of study and potential future career paths. Instructional time each weekday, along with breaks and lunch: the commitment is from 8:45 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, for two weeks. (The exception could be that a field trip or two may return later, but within regular business hours.) The curriculum features visiting faculty, guest speakers, trips, and projects with organizations whose work is on the frontiers of their field.

For more information about the course, please visit https://explo.org/veterinary-science.

Instructor Responsibilities

Review existing project-based curriculum and work with our Office of Teaching and Learning to customize it based on your areas of interests and experience. Teach each weekday, with an on-campus commitment from 8:45-3:00, with some longer days for trips off-campus. Complete the relevant and necessary daily preparation required for delivering an engaging student experience, including lab preparation and classroom setup. Facilitate connections with external partners and guest speakers, as appropriate. Attend weekly faculty meetings, and provide student feedback throughout the summer. Chaperone off-campus academic trips with your class in order to integrate the experience with curricular content.

Dates, Compensation + Benefits:

This is a 2-week seasonal position. We expect the person hired will spend some time on campus the weekend of July 12/13 to review their classroom set up, become familiar with the campus, orient themselves to the program, and meet with our Office of Teaching and learning to prep for a Monday start. Compensation for this role is $2,500 to $3,000, based on relevant training and experience. Lunch is provided for all instructors. This is not a live in required position. However, if housing is needed, the program can provide room and board from July 12 to July 26, 2025.

About You

You have earned a degree in biology, veterinary science, animal behavior, farm studies, or related field. You have professional or academic experience in a relevant field. You are available to work on campus for the duration of the program.

Physical Requirements And Work Environment

This position will require staff members to occasionally assist with a variety of physical tasks, including carrying signage and supplies, event set-up and tear-down, and standing or walking for prolonged periods of time during events; responsibilities before students arrive will include setting up both indoor and outdoor spaces.

The Wellesley College campus is large and spread out, and we will be using spaces throughout the campus. Because of this, days will include significant amounts of walking. Trips may also include walking tours and similar demands.

EXPLO will make reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act that would enable employees to perform the essential functions of their job. Accommodations must be requested in writing prior to the summer.
