JOB SUMMARY
Performs clinical lab procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Checks the test requisition or computer orders for correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. Corrects or brings discrepancies to the attention of the lab director.
- Greets each patient in a friendly, professional manner.
- Verifies positive patient identification using at least 2 patient identifiers prior to collecting specimen.
- Performs venipunctures and finger/heel sticks using aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures.
- Exhibits concern for the patient's comfort and safety.
- Explains procedures/process before obtaining specimens.
- Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity. Adheres to lab policies for rejection of unacceptable specimens.
- Coordinates the collections of therapeutic drug-monitoring assays with nursing personnel to ensure the proper drug dose to collection time.
- Coordinates special lab studies with ambulatory services and pharmacy. Administers oral test solutions.
- Initials, dates and times all collections.
- Offers additional assistance-seeks to ensure patient satisfaction before concluding encounter.
- Registers patients in to the computer system, labels specimens, and collects and receives specimens into the lab computer.
- Answers phone calls - records request for blood collection, answers general questions concerning test orders and collection, takes messages and routes calls.
- Basic computer knowledge and ability to touch type.
- Ability to discern color.
- Experience with lab information systems or the willingness to learn.
- Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education or subsequent training.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Phlebotomy certification preferred.
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages a plus.
- Ability to spend long periods of time on feet.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
