This is an extended posting through September 5,2025, for Electronics Technician I positions in Division 5, Durham County. Multiple Electronics Technician I positions will be filled. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.This position will serve as an Electronic Technician in the Traffic Services Unit. This is skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic traffic control systems, lighted signs and roadway lighting. Duties will include: install traffic signal equipment by wiring/installing signal head, wiring detectors, installing/wiring controllers. Employee will trace out electrical wiring diagrams, locate trouble, dismantle control, replace worn or faulty parts, reassemble, and test the traffic control system, and may supervise helpers. Employee will re-lamp/repair roadway light fixtures, troubleshoot and repair roadway lighting control cabinets. Skills required include: general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe/efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trades. Employee should possess the ability to diagnose source of equipment failures, as well as possess the ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Possess the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices. Overtime work is required when necessary and the position is subject to emergency callback.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesManagement prefers applicants with the following:Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components.Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.Knowledge of the National Electric Code.Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision.Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions.Additional Expectations:Possess the ability to do heavy lifting to shoulder high. Possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and hot outside conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. May be required to work during non-traditional work hours including weekends, holidays, nights and times of emergency. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
