Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled light and heavy manual tasks to repair and maintain automobiles, trucks, and a variety of construction equipment, machines, and tools; and performs other work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Mechanics are assigned to maintain and repair a broad range of gasoline and diesel powered equipment both in the shop and in the field. Work is performed on all major systems of automotive and construction equipment. The Mechanic I level is for employees assigned to assist Mechanic II's and may, upon becoming qualified to diagnose and repair problems on a full range of equipment maintained by the County shop, be promoted to the Mechanic II level.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge and Ability:
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, practices and procedures used in automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines, electronic controls, electrical systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems and other components and systems.

- Diagnoses and repairs diesel and gasoline engines, standard and automatic transmissions, clutch and brake systems, generator and starter systems, differentials and drive systems, pumps, steering systems, hydraulic systems, and other major automotive and equipment systems.
- Installs and repairs electrical and communications systems.
- Operates vehicles and equipment repaired to test operation and to transport for repairs.
- Orders necessary parts and supplies.
- Keeps records of time worked, equipment parts and supplies used, and conditions observed.
- Operates welding equipment to make repairs and to fabricate new parts and equipment.

Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) (1):
- Humboldt County, Nevada contributes 36.75% of an eligible Regular Member's salary for retirement.
- The NDC is voluntary retirement savings program for employees of the State of Nevada, NSHE and other local government employers.
- The program is designed to supplement other retirement savings and pensions.
- Contributions are made pre-tax and investment earnings are tax-deferred or you may invest on pre-tax (Roth) basis and your investment earnings will be tax free upon eligible withdrawal.

Insurance Stipend:

Annual Leave:
- All full-time employees will earn annual leave beginning from their initial date of hire at a rate of .0385 hours earned per hour's paid (3).
- Part-time employees who regularly work 20 hours or more per week will earn annual leave on a pro-rated basis.
- Employees earn additional annual leave hours at 3, 6, 11, 16 and 21 years of service up to a maximum of 192 hours per year.
- While on probationary period, an employee cannot take annual leave for the first six months; the employee still accrues vacation leave during this time.
- Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees accrue sick leave at the rate of .05 hours for each hour worked up to a maximum accrual of 120 hours per year with a maximum accrual of 980 hours.
