Job Summary:
The Dietary Aide plays an essential role in supporting our dietary team by assisting with food preparation, meal service, and maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen and dining environment. This position ensures that residents receive nutritious, appealing meals that meet individual dietary needs and preferences, under the supervision of the Dietary Director or Assistant Director.
Work Environment:
This position is primarily performed indoors within our long-term care facility and includes work in kitchen areas, resident dining spaces, and individual resident rooms. You will routinely interact with residents, visitors, healthcare personnel, and fellow team members. The environment may include exposure to:
- Slippery or obstructed floors
- Sharp utensils and cooking equipment
- Chemicals and cleaning agents
- Hazardous materials and waste, including human waste and blood-borne pathogens
- Communicable diseases
- High-stress, urgent medical situations
- Assist in the preparation and serving of meals and snacks.
- Set up trays and deliver meals to residents based on diet requirements and menus.
- Check trays for accuracy regarding dietary restrictions and resident preferences.
- Operate on the central tray line, preparing both regular and modified diet trays.
- Clean and maintain kitchen workspaces, including dining tables, equipment, utensils, and dishware.
- Wash, sanitize, and store trays and cooking utensils.
- Stock and store incoming food items and maintain proper inventory.
- Deliver and retrieve food carts from corridors.
- Report unsafe conditions, broken equipment, and incidents as necessary.
- Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives.
- Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Previous experience in a dietary department within a hospital or long-term care facility is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently and within a team.
- Must maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Reliable, punctual, and flexible to meet scheduling needs.
- Ability to push, pull, move, or lift up to 50 lbs to a height of 3 feet and over a distance of 50 feet.
- Capable of standing or walking for 8+ hours per shift.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching required.
- Must meet the sensory requirements to perform essential functions, including verbal communication and visual inspection of food trays.
